Government commit to ending new HIV transmissions in England by 2030

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock MP, will today announce the Governments commitment to reach zero new HIV transmission in England by 2030.

THE announcement will be made at the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), Evening Standard and Independent’s AIDSfree Cities Global Forum summit taking place in Mayfair, London.

Mr Hancock is due to say: “So today we’re setting a new goal: eradicating HIV transmission in England by 2030. No new infections within the next decade. Becoming one of the first countries to reach the UN zero infections target by 2030.”

The Department for Health & Social Care has confirmed that an expert group will now be established to develop an action plan over the course of this year. They have said that prevention will be at the heart of this commitment, alongside measurable action points for each group who are at risk of infection, including gay and bisexual men, Black African and minority ethnic (BAME) groups and for all other heterosexuals, and extensive monitoring of progress.

This news follows the UK meeting the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets in November 2018, ahead of the 2020 deadline, with 92% of people living with HIV diagnosed; 98% of those on treatment; and 97% of those have an undetectable viral load, which means they can’t pass on HIV.

Ian Green, Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust said: “Today’s commitment is a seminal moment in the fight to end new HIV transmissions in England. In becoming one of the first nations to make such a commitment, the Government has shown decisive leadership on HIV and we applaud them for making this pledge.

“We now have the tools to end HIV transmissions. Through regular HIV testing, condom use, access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), prevention information and advice, and effective treatment which means people living with HIV cannot pass on the virus, we can stop HIV in its tracks. That’s why Terrence Higgins Trust has been vocal in our call for this ambitious but achievable commitment.

“For England to reach zero new HIV transmissions, the Department for Health & Social Care, Public Health England, alongside local authorities, must now urgently work in collaboration to address some of the most pressing HIV issues. These include stepping up HIV testing to ensure the 8,000 people who remain undiagnosed can get onto treatment, immediately adding more places to the PrEP trial and ensuring sexual health services are properly funded. Without these actions, this commitment simply won’t be achievable.

“The clock has now started ticking towards the end of HIV transmissions in England. Today’s commitment demonstrates that the Government has listened to our demand for a bold vision on HIV. Now it must act upon our call to ensure services and interventions are urgently put in place to ensure that by 2030 this pledge is made a reality.”

Deborah Gold, Chief Executive of NAT (National AIDS Trust) said: “As the Government makes this welcome and important step to formally commit to end the HIV epidemic by 2030, action must urgently follow.

“Meaningful progress to the 2030 goal will not happen whilst sexual health services creak at the seams due to continued underinvestment in public health. People are unable to access the HIV prevention drug PrEP and are now going on to acquire HIV.

“Matt Hancock must act quickly and decisively to ensure that public health is adequately funded and PrEP available to all who need it in England. We look forward to working with him and others on plans to achieve elimination of HIV.”

Last chance to have your say on the future of the Brighton Pride Village Party

You have the last chance to have your say on the future of the Pride Village Party with the council’s online consultation closing on Thursday, January 31.

FOLLOWING representations in April 2018 from The Kingcliffe Society, conservation group, the city council decided to allow residents across the city to have their say on the future of the Pride Village Party (PVP).

UP until 2015 the PVP was not organised officially by either the council nor by Pride itself, instead, visitors independently congregated in the area known as the ‘gay village’ attracted by the LGBT+ bars and clubs that are located in the St James Street area. At times this caused chaos as it was not possible to regulate the numbers of people coming.

Since 2015, at the request of the council, Pride organisers have managed the PVP putting resources in place to manage the disruption to local people including additional security personnel, street cleaning and toilets. It is now a ticketed event limited only to certain parts of St James’s Street and neighbouring roads and it is generally considered to be well organised.

The council has taken the decision in an election year to ask residents all over the city if they think the event which generates £20.5 million for the city’s business economy, and raises many thousands of pounds for local generic voluntary sector organisations who the council can no longer grant fund due to government cuts, if among other things they think the event should continue to take place.

The consultation is open from, December 13, 2018 to Thursday, January 31, 2019. Responses will be reported to the Tourism, Development and Culture committee in March 2019.

David Hainsworth former Secretary of The Kingscliffe Society says: “Of course it should continue! For the last few years the Pride Team has successfully handled the event which, from the organisational point of view, continues to improve each year. Prior to that, and without any formal structure and organisation, the event was seriously chaotic and at times, dangerous.

“There are calls to move the event to the seafront. There are advantages to this, one is that it would be away from residential streets. The question would then be, how are members of the public that remain attracted to the various establishments in the St. James’s Street area managed? Residents do not want choas to return.

“The consultation is an opportunity for everyone who lives in the area to put their view forward, not just the few. It’s an opportunity to collectively secure the future of this crucially important part of the City’s Pride Festivities.”

COMPETITION: Last chance to win a 3D Lipo ‘Manscape’ worth £1,750

The closing date for winning a 3D Lipo Manscape is Thursday, January 31 at midnight.

3D Lipo Brighton opened its doors on Portland Road, Hove bringing the very latest 3D Lipo technology to the city.

For those who don’t know, 3D Lipo offer totally non-invasive surgical treatments, initially tailored for inch loss and slimming, which have now advanced to the point of body sculpting and non surgical facelifts.

3D Lipo Brighton studio is unlike most others as they have steered away from other treatments like botox and fillers concentrating solely on the 3D range of technology where their staff are experts.

Impressive Results

Jeremy Nargi of 3D Lipo Brighton came across the treatment himself in London and over two courses of cavitation (a system where heat and sound literally shatter the fat cells) lost 17 inches across his body, so impressed with the results he has now set up 3D Lipo Brighton with the intention to open other studios across the country. Jeremy says: “The procedure is painless and just takes an hour of your day once a week, as long as you keep your water intake high and walk to the studio rather than drive, the inch loss will follow.” Already, during their pre-launch, clients have already witnessed losses of up to 11 inches. Jeremy continues: “We want our clients to be happy and to continue to come back – we are like a safety net for when they want to indulge – they know we can help get rid of it. A happy client is a great advertisement.”

Fit 3D Body Scanner

3D Lipo Brighton is one of only a handful of clinics in the UK to be bringing the Fit 3D Body Scanner, a device that takes 400 images of you over 40 seconds measuring every part of your body so you can see your progress. This will show you where you can improve not only on a healthy lifestyle but also for fitness too. 3D Lipo Brighton have said they will open this up to non 3D Lipo clients as a way of monitoring users’ fitness for those who love the gym!

What BLAGSS means to me

John Moore
John Moore

John Moore the new Chair of BLAGSS (Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society) wants you to know ‘What BLAGSS means to him!’

“WHEN I moved down to Brighton with my husband 5 years ago, we knew no-one. We had recently retired and wanted to embrace the lifestyle that Brighton had to offer.

After picking up a leaflet about BLAGSS we soon got involved, playing tennis and helping out. With a background in Leisure Management I took on a Sports Development role trying out new activities for members. Being an ex-competitive swimmer I also joined Out to Swim and swam regularly.

Through BLAGSS we have made a huge amount of new friends and found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming, many being in a similar position having moved here in recent years. I would like to say my tennis has improved; but my social network certainly has.

You don’t have to be super sporty, BLAGSS accommodates all skill levels and abilities, is non-judgemental and provides some coaching too. The social events are great fun and a great way to meet and make new friends.

Membership offers a wide range of sporting benefits plus discounts at a range of local partners including our friends The Camelford and The Crown.”

Philip Erritty plays football with BLAGSS says:

Philip Erritty

“In 2013, I was treated for brain cancer. After three years of recovery I could be relatively active again, but I found myself at 28 living at home in the countryside, frustrated and eager to get out there again.

I felt isolated, and as a young gay man I felt a desperate need to meet other gay people. My dad was brilliant and discovered MindOut, who I arranged to meet to talk about my issues. It was through MindOut that I discovered BLAGSS. On the face of it, BLAGSS offered me something really special: a chance to meet other gay people socially and build on my physical health – the two most important things in my life at that time.

Football is my number one sport so I knew exactly who to contact. Nonetheless, I was nervous about going, after all I had acquired some disabilities like dodgy balance and vision problems since I last played, and joining a new group is always a bit scary…..

Fast-forward to December last year, I decided to stand up at the annual BLAGSS conference and thank Elliot and Colin, two of the many cherished friends I’ve made since joining their group two years ago. It is thanks to them that I’ve had the opportunity to travel across the country, and even go to Paris, to play in football tournaments, and I’ve had the joy of walking in the parade at Pride for the first time.

Through their friendliness and support I’ve had the chance to feel like I belong, and what BLAGSS has given me in my life is more than I could ever have imagined after such difficult times.”

THE charity is launching new guidelines for doctors that are caring for those who are most severely affected by the condition.

The document has been produced by the British Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME (BACME) and includes experienced clinicians involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with severe ME.

It is designed to help professionals dealing with those that are house or bedbound to feel able to better understand the condition, and find a way forward in managing the complex illness and improve the patients quality of life.

Colin Barton, chairman of the Sussex charity that is a member organisation of BACME said: “We welcome the publication of these guidelines as many doctors in the region are keen to know more about how they can help the most badly affected of their ME patients that are housebound, unable to mobilise without a wheelchair, or bedridden and dependent on others”

Conservatives ‘promote’ reduction in Trader Permit charges

Brighton & Hove City Council agree to consider reducing trader permit charges.

Cllr Lee Wares
Cllr Lee Wares

CONSERVATIVE councillor Lee Wares asked the Council to consider reducing trader permit charges during the Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on January 22.

After identifying a surplus from parking charges and fines in the previous financial year, Cllr Lee Wares asked for any future surplus to be used to reduce the cost of trader permits in the city. The surplus last year was nearly £500k after transport project borrowing costs, concession bus passes and subsidised bus routes had been paid for.

Commenting after the committee meeting Cllr Wares said: “I am pleased that the Council agreed to consider this. Conservatives will always back business and enterprise in the city and reducing trader permit costs will help our local economy thrive. If the council finds itself with a surplus that can be used to ease the pressure on local traders and their customers, then it makes absolute sense to pass that on.”
