TRAVEL FEATURE: Mallorca – a secret place?

Roger Wheeler and his husband Mike stay steer clear of the tourist hotspots and explore off the beaten track in Mallorca.

Hotel Es Lloquet – the Secret Place
Hotel Es Lloquet – the Secret Place

Millions of people, Brits included, visit Mallorca every year with most heading straight for the famous beach resorts of Cala Figuera, Illetas, Palma NovaCan Pastilla, or Palma with its magnificent Gothic Cathedral, there are plenty to choose from.

If it’s gay Mallorca you seek and it can be very gay, then you need to concentrate on the major resorts, but you miss a lot by not seeing the interior of this beautiful island.

As usual we spent hours trolling though many internet sites looking for something a little different, there was plenty of choice but, purely by chance we found Hotel Es Lloquet – the Secret Place. It looked promising and after so many hours gazing at the computer screen we succumbed and booked.

It isn’t called the secret place for nothing, truly hidden in the heart of the countryside, close to Campos and not far from the famous Es Trenc beach.  It is about an hour’s drive from the airport but, almost impossible to actually find, as there are few signs and of course the sat nav on our hire car was useless.

Eventually, after almost having given up the search, we drove up a small dirt track and there it was, our own secret place for a few days. A charming old, restored, farmhouse. There was nothing as formal as a reception desk and no one in sight in the huge stylish lounge until the rather charming Jorge appeared and then, all was well.

Hotel Es Lloquet – the Secret Place is the epitome of peace and quiet. Only 18 rooms, all of which – in the main building – have their own private terrace and jacuzzi, huge comfortable beds and vast bathrooms. It is in need of some TLC but that in no way detracts from the quiet beauty of the location and the hotel itself.

The few staff on duty – Jorge; Jaime and Cristina – could not have been more friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The hotel, although fully booked, was like a ghost town, we saw no other guests. There were vast lounges with extremely comfortable seating around the pool but, no one there. The two swimming pools were quite lovely, the main pool was beautiful and deserted, and all you could hear was birdsong – bliss.

The beach at Es Trenc
The beach at Es Trenc

Campos the nearest town is a sleepy, typically Mallorcan town with a few shops and restaurants, not exactly a destination but quite pleasant. The beach at Es Trenc when I last visited, way back, was very quiet, quite nudist and gay, not so anymore. Crowded, noisy, not exactly relaxing, although the beach itself, what you could see of it, was the same white sand and of course the azure blue sea was still quite lovely.

We selected a semi quiet spot and settled down for some serious sun worship. Within minutes several fully clothed ladies decided to sit right next to us and talk, loudly, on their phones.  There was no escape, we left, sadly never to return, the thousands of tourists, which included us, make the whole experience one to be endured rather than enjoyed.

There are several nice villages in the area with some great restaurants but once again the hoards of tourist are there too, so nice quiet suppers in local tabernas were hard to find.  However, on our way back from the beach we spotted Moli de Sal, it looked promising so we went back for dinner

It is set in a beautiful old mill; we ate some really lovely food in the stunning garden.  The kitchen which is basically a barbecue, includes a full range of meat and very fresh fish.  A great place to eat in an area not noted for its cuisine.

If you want to avoid the crowded beaches there are many places to see in the heart of rural Mallorca.  We were told about Ermita de Sant Honorat, not far from Lluc Major. This is a monastery on top of a very large hill, Puig de Randa, which rises 550m out of the plain. It was founded in 1275 and today has a good restaurant, museum, a very beautiful church –  Santuari de Cura – and tourists are few and far between. The 180 degree views over most of the island are stunning. It’s well worth the trip.

We were sorry to leave Es Lloquet behind us, heading off for a few days in Palma, which in hindsight was a mistake, hot busy city that it is, we should have stayed put. Should we ever choose to return there is no question of where we would stay.

PREVIEW: Plenty Queer at Cafe Plenty

Plenty Queer is a three-day arts festival celebrating Pride and the LGBT+ movement from August 3-5 at Cafe Plenty.

Plenty Queer was born out of a desire to promote queer artistic voices, highlight the meaning of Pride, and raise some money for the Terrence Higgins Trust (THT). It has been a shared feeling among the organisers Brighton peers that, whilst always a great weekend, Brighton Pride often overlooks the creative LGBT+ talent the city has on offer.

On Thursday, August 3 from 19.00-00.00 Plenty Queer is hosting the private (although very public) view for the Trace exhibition. The evening will feature spoken word, poetry from queer artist and guest speakers talking about the history LGBT+ movement.

For the Friday night party on August 4, from 7.30pm-2.00a, they’re converting Cafe Plenty into a pampering salon for their Pre Pride Preparation Party.

They’ll have various beautification stations providing, glitter, manicures and makeup. There is live entertainment from award-winning drag prince Alfie Ordinary and award-winning songwriter Paul Diello. Their resident dj’s will have everyone dancing till the early morning.

Finally on Pride Saturday they’ll be providing an outside friendly festival environment for people to relax in after watching the parade, with food stalls and DJ’s to lift everyone’s spirits.

The Trace exhibition will be on display at Cafe Plenty from August 3-7. All of these events we will be Raising money for the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Alex Foley, Trace founder, said: “Trace is a queer artist collective I started at the end of 2016 that aims to promote queer artists and facilitate their collaboration, as well as to engage with local communities. We had our inaugural exhibition at Dynamite Gallery on Trafalgar Street in January of this year, and since then have been working on getting more artists into the fold and raising some money to put on future exhibitions.

“We were thrilled when Nick approached us to do this collaboration with Cafe Plenty. A lot of our artists feel really dejected about the corporation-centric feel of recent Prides, and so I think there was a lot of excitement about holding an exhibition that had an authentically queer party vibe, really showcasing the queer talent that typically gets pushed to the fringes.

“In fact, one of the reasons I started Trace is because Brighton has such a wealth of queer voices, which don’t get the platform they deserve. Plenty has given us use of their incredible space to throw a sort of pre-Pride queer salon where people can get their nails and face paint done for Pride whilst admiring the art we’ve got up, plus there will be queer DJs and performers playing all day on the Friday and Saturday, which we think will give the exhibition a really unique atmosphere.”

Brighton Pride parade will highlight hate crime in the UK and abroad

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales on July 27, Brighton & Hove Pride continues with it’s commitment to campaigning for global equality.

The 2017 Brighton Pride Community Parade will continue to highlight the struggles of those across the UK and beyond featuring placards highlighting hate crimes from the past twelve months in the U.K. and aboard.

The horror of acid attacks on the streets of East London, the victims of the Finsbury Park attack, those lost in the Manchester Arena bombing and in the terror of the Westminster and London Bridge attacks.

The gay men kidnapped and tortured in Chechnya, Indonesian men publicly flogged because of their sexuality, the horrors of corrective rape of lesbians in South Africa, the Turkish LGBT+ activists arrested and beaten for attending Pride in Istanbul, the gay men stoned to death in Iraq by ISIS and the staggering numbers of trans men and women murdered across the world.

As we face an increasingly troubled world hate crime is increasing. The terror attacks at Manchester Arena, London Bridge and Westminster may have brought the nation together in defiant unity but in the aftermath anti-Muslim hate crime incidents increased five-fold. The terrorist attack on Muslims in Finsbury Park highlighted for many how far we have to go to truly address the hatred sparked by repugnant ideologies.

Last year over 20 homophobic attacks were reported every day in England and Wales and post Brexit the numbers continue to rise daily.

Paul Kemp
Paul Kemp

Paul Kemp, Director of Brighton Pride, said: “We need to unite together to say no more. Not in the cities and towns we are lucky enough to call home, the country we are proud to be part of or in a world in which we are all citizens. This Brighton Pride lets all campaign for change. Change we can make together, change we can be proud of, change we need.”

Pride will once again hold a one minute silence at 6pm across all Pride sites, to remember and honour all victims of hate crimes.

Busted draw record crowds to Bristol Pride

Thousands journey to Bristol making Pride 2017 the biggest and most successful yet!

Thousands of revellers made the Bristol Pride 2017 festival the biggest and most colourful event staged in the city to date.

The extended weekend saw 80s icon Belinda Carlisle headline Friday night with pop-rock band Busted closing the festival in spectacular fashion on Saturday July 8.

Saturday, July 8 saw record numbers of visitors from all over the country and overseas, attend the festival to join the celebrations.

The main festival on Saturday, July 8, was the culmination of eleven days involving nineteen events across the city, celebrating Pride and championing the local LGBT+ communities.

The day started with 7,000 people marching through the city centre with thousand more lining the streets to watch and cheer them on.

Businesses across Bristol decked themselves out with rainbow flags and special window displays. Trees and lamp posts of the infamous Bristol Gloucester Road were adorned in rainbow ribbons and the iconic Victoria Rooms of the University of Bristol were lit up in the colours of the rainbow for the whole of Pride week.

The main Pride Day festival (July 8) took place on the Bristol Harbourside, filling the Bristol Amphitheatre, Waterfront Square and Bristol’s Millennium Square where a record 30,000 people joined in to soaked up the vibrant diverse atmosphere.

The bustling market area had more than eighty stalls featuring representatives from statutory organisations, LGBT+HIV groups and craft and arts retailers.

Along with the headline acts other artists performing on the Main Stage this year included Jordan Gray from The Voice, Sonia, Jennifer Paige, Saara Aalto, Union J, Katrina of The Waves, Avec Sans, and Bristol’s own Dr Meaker.

On the Cabaret Stage over 27 of the nation’s top drag artists flocked to Bristol to perform, including Britain’s Got Talent Semi-Finalist Danny Beard, Mary Golds, the crowd surfing Drag With No Name and Ru Paul Drag Race season nine entrant Charlie Hides.

Daryn Carter
Daryn Carter

Event organiser Daryn Carter, said: “This year has been absolutely incredible. The support we have had, from businesses like our Headline Sponsor: Unite Students, down to the public and our volunteers have all made Bristol Pride 2017 the biggest and best event to date. Whilst all the performances were incredible the Parade March was a particular highlight for me this year, seeing so many young people, and those of all ages, able to come and celebrate themselves freely was emotional. Whilst we marched for our own rights and freedoms we also remembered our LGBT+ brothers and sister from around the globe who live in fear.”

Unite Students Chief Financial Controller, Ryan Mahoney took part in the parade with his family, said:  “Unite Students was founded in Bristol over 25 years ago and provides homes for students from all over the world, so it seems very fitting that we were lead sponsors this year.  The parade presented a brilliant occasion to give my children an opportunity to see just how important it is to celebrate inclusiveness. We were incredibly proud to join together with the wider Bristol community on Saturday to support such an important event. The atmosphere was really energetic, positive and inspiring; the children loved it.”

Over 150 volunteers helped make Bristol Pride 2017 happen and while organisers are still busy closing this year’s event they have already started planning for 2018 when the Festival will run from July 6-15, 2018 with the Pride Day Festival on July 14.

Bristol Pride is a registered charity: run by volunteers and works all year round to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and to promote equality and diversity, for all, through various events and activities which include school visits, campaigns, talks to business, consultation services and lobbying.

The first ever national UK tour of La Cage Aux Folles, starring John Partridge, Adrian Zmed and Marti Webb minces into the Theatre Royal, Brighton on August 15.

Written by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman, and based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, La Cage Aux Folles follows the story of Georges, the manager of a Saint Tropez nightclub, and his partner, Albin, a drag artiste and the club’s star attraction. They live an idyllic existence in the south of France but behind the curtains of this sparkling extravaganza, all may be about to change when Georges’ son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to the daughter of a notorious right-wing politician determined to close down the local colourful night-life. Drama and hilarity ensue when a meeting of the parents forces them to cover up their vibrant lifestyle. Will Albin be able to play the role of his life to ensure that Jean-Michel can marry his love?

John Partridge will play the iconic role of ‘Albin’, who moonlights as star drag act Zaza at the infamous La Cage aux Folles nightclub. Partridge’s extensive theatre credits include the West End productions of A Chorus Line at the London Palladium, Cats, Starlight Express and Chicago. He is also well-known for playing the loveable Christian Clarke in BBC’s EastEnders and as a judge on TV’s Over The Rainbow.

Hooker, which ran for 90 episodes over 5 years, and for playing ‘Johnny Nogerelli’ in the cult classic film Grease 2. Adrian then went on to star alongside big screen legend Tom Hanks in the comedy, Bachelor Party. One of the West End’s most revered leading ladies’, TV star and recording artist Marti Webb will play ‘Jacqueline’, friend to ‘Albin’ and ‘Georges’, and owner of the restaurant ‘Chez Jacqueline’. Webb has played leading roles in numerous West End and touring musicals including Evita, Godspell, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Blood Brothers, Oliver, Oklahoma, 42nd Street, and Half-a-Sixpence.

She received huge critical acclaim for her performance in Tell Me on a Sunday, which was written specifically for her by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black. She has recorded nine solo albums and had many hit singles, including Always There, the theme from the hit BBC series ‘Howard’s Way’ and the smash hit Take That Look off Your Face.

La Cage aux Folles is a multi award-winning musical. The original Broadway production became an instant smash hit when it opened in 1983. It received nine nominations for Tony Awards and won six, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The success of the musical spawned a London Palladium production and several international runs. The 2004 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival, and the 2008 London revival garnered the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

Setting out on its first ever UK tour, this brand new production is produced by Bill Kenwright, directed by Martin Connor, choreographed by Olivier Award Winning Bill Deamer, designed by Gary McCann, with Wigs and Make-up Design by Richard Mawbey, Lighting by Ben Cracknell and Sound by Dan Samson (the team responsible for the sumptuous current hit, The Sound of Music), and musical direction by Mark Crossland.

Greens complain about award winning bus operator of the year

London Assembly Greens raise concerns over high number of fatalities caused by award-winning ‘bus operator of the year’.

Caroline Russell AM
Caroline Russell AM

Bus companies with poor safety records will no longer be recommended for the ‘bus operator of the year’ award after London Assembly Member Caroline Russell raised with the Mayor’s office that the 2016 winner, Stagecoach, had a high number of fatalities and injuries from collisions.

Although Transport For London (TFL) does not award the prize, it does make recommendations to the London Transport Awards. In a written response the Mayor’s office confirmed that in future injuries from collisions will now be taken into consideration before any endorsements are made for the award.

Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell, said: “It is outrageous that a company with the worst record of collisions with people who were killed or injured should be eligible for an award.

“Safety should be an absolute priority for any transport operator – and how safe they keep their passengers and staff should be an explicit factor in recognising any good work.

“I’m extremely glad the Mayor has listened to my concerns and advised TfL to change their criteria for award recommendations to make sure they specifically look at injuries sustained in collisions with buses.”
