Prowler stores rescued from administration

Prowler the well-established gay brand and one of the largest gay retailers in the UK has been rescued from administration by UK-based erotic wholesaler, ABS Holdings.

ABS Holdings, the biggest distributor of erotic toys in the UK, are also owners of Fifty and Dean in Soho, as well as 29 stores nationwide carrying the Simply Pleasure branding.

They have purchased from the administrators the Prowler online business and shops in London and Brighton where they say they intend to breath new life into the Prowler stores adding brand new products and making sure that classic favourites are once again in stock and readily available.

ABS Commercial Director Symon Reeves, said: “I am really excited to be the new owner of Prowler Brighton and I am particularly looking forward to working closely with Peter Booth and the rest of the store team. Please forgive us for being a little understocked over the past couple of months, but we have just placed orders for some of your favourites. We have also ordered a whole lot of new great products that we know you’ll love to bring excitement back to the store.”

For the last 20 years, Prowler has supported gay communities across the UK, offering the best gay brands at the best prices. The Prowler shop in St James Street in Brighton is a focus for the LGBT+ communities in Brighton and Hove and the managers there have always recognised the importance of supporting local community organisations.

This takeover ensures that Prowler in Brighton will keep doing this – as well as adding fresh, up to date products and making sure that you have even more choice when it comes to essentials, lubes, toys, herbals and aromas.

Prowler will also be able to continue their support of local fundraising organisations like Brighton Bear Weekend whose merchandise they sell in the shop and take no commission.

As the company struggled to remain trading over the last few months many popular lines in Prowler Brighton went out of stock as suppliers refused to carry on supplying the former owners.

To apologise to regular customers who might have been inconvenienced by some of Prowler’s favourite brands being understocked ABS have moved quickly to restock their Extra Strong Supplements. If you mention that Gscene sent you, they’ll give you a 2 Pack for FREE with every 6 Pack you buy!

Peter Booth the manager of Prowler Brighton, said: “We look forward to continue providing the gay communities in Brighton and Hove with excellent products at excellent prices and we can’t wait to add the ABS touch to the popular Prowler brand to take the stores and website to the next level.”

Equalities Minister and Mayor of London welcome new Gay Star News initiative.

Snickers and Gay Star News have launched a new campaign today to help LGBT+ people called; ‘be who you are’.

Gay Star Support, a new part of the Gay Star News site, will provide resources for anyone in the community who is struggling and telling the stories of LGBT+s who have been through tough times and now want to help others.

Snickers is sponsoring Gay Star Support and will use its online advertising to send the message to everyone that they should ‘be who you are’.

Tris Reid-Smith, Editor-in-Chief of Gay Star News, added: LGBT+ people face specific issues like coming out or overcoming hate. And like everyone else, we have relationship ups and downs, problems at school, work or home, body issues and more.

Gay Star Support will provide inspiration from people who have gone through this, useful advice and a list of places to turn if you are struggling.

If our work with Snickers and Mars helps just a few people be their true selves, it will be worth it. But our dream is to inspire everyone to support their friends. That way we can make a real difference not just to LGBT+s but to the whole community.”

With LGBT+ mental health now a major concern in the varied LGBT+ communities, the initiative has been welcomed by the Equalities Minister and the Mayor of London.

BOOK REVIEW: Warwick Rowers Signature Edition

Warwick Rowers Signature Edition

Following on from the great success and universally positive feedback of the first limited edition book last year, the Warwick Rowers have returned with this hefty slab of arty nudity.

These lads are huge in all sorts of ways and this massive hefty well stuffed and high quality book reflects the hard work and dedication that these handsome lads put into their bodies and their campaigning for equality – and against homophobia in all sports – with equal passion. Angus Malcolm’s photography is superb, with a stylish and elegant monochrome collection which harks back to Aleksandr Rodchenko pictures of sportsmen from the 30’s.  Apart from being the producer of the award-winning Warwick Rowers calendars he is also the founder and Chair of Sport Allies. There is a superb sense of playfulness in these images, it’s all about the tease after all, but Malcolm’s cool gaze brings us up from our lurid imaginations and allows us to enjoy the healthy fit bodies of these sportsmen as sculptural group settings. It’s classy sensual and erotic stuff.  (you can check out his tumbler and twitter feed here, full of interesting behind the scenes shots and other work of his)

The book weighs in at 5.5lbs, and has 216 pages of images of the boys in a variety of hot & teasey, erotic and sexy poses. Produced to the same luxurious specification as their first book, and issued in a limited and numbered edition of only 1000 copies.

Along with the purchase of the book, there’s an exclusive print copy of the first published report from Sport Allies.  With funding from Warwick Rowers, Sport Allies has commissioned an authoritative report on the problem of homophobia and gender bias in sporting culture.  Not cheap, but then this is an investment and  talking point and the perfect gift for the self-loving appreciator of the honest, lithe fitness of these young fitties bodies.

If you have nothing else to do then you may enjoy their twitter feed, in fact you may enjoy it even if you have a lot to do…. its NSFW’ish

Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus elect new chairman

Vaughan Leyshon
Vaughan Leyshon

Vaughan Leyshon was elected Chairman of the Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in March.

Vaughan was unanimously selected by members of the chorus to head the body of trustees and officers who manage the Chorus.

Vaughan, who has been a member of the chorus for four years, says: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be elected Chairman of Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus. The Chorus is a vibrant and exciting organisation with a reputation for producing entertaining shows, which delight our large band of dedicated fans.

Obviously, we are known for our singing and our shows, but we also offer opportunities for our members to socialise and we exist, in part, to support our members and the wider community.

I’m looking forward to collaborating with the rest of trustees and, with our Musical Director Marc Yarrow, building on Paul Charlton’s great work in growing the chorus and expanding our repertoire. Fans can expect regular high quality shows with some surprises and new material”.

Paul Charlton
Paul Charlton

Paul Charlton, who served the last four years as chairman and three more as trustee, says: “I had an amazing time, but after seven years, I decided to take a break from the management team and I can’t think of a better suited new chairman for the chorus. I want to wish Vaughan the best of luck with his new position and of course, I will be actively helping behind the scenes when required”.

The new Management Team is already hard at work producing the chorus’ forthcoming new show which will premier at the Brighton Fringe Festival at St George’s Church in Kemptown on May 5 & 6.

Entitled The Superhero Show, it will explore and celebrate those people that the chorus’s members regards as their heroes, musical and not, and helped them become who they are now.

The Chorus will be raising funds to help save the ‘outstanding’ flagship HIV charity The Sussex Beacon raising funds under the slogan #SaveTheSussexBeacon.

Erik Jacobsen continues in his role as secretary to the chorus and Silvio Grasso will continue to handle the PR.

Anti-Bullying charity launch new campaign #TalkToYourBoys

International anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label launches new campaign called #TalkToYourBoys.

The campaign, aims to encourage young males to discuss their feelings or issues they are experiencing with parents or peers and will highlight how effective communication can be in helping boys navigate issues of bullying, poor self-esteem and mental health issues.

The launch of #TalkToYourBoys is a direct response to Ditch the Label’s Annual Bullying Survey which polled nearly 9,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 20 and found that 1 in 2 boys had been bullied but half of them had never reported it.

Boys are more likely to talk to their parents about exam stress or ambitions for the future than their experience of being bullied.  When asked why they didn’t report it, 1 in 3 said they could deal with it on their own, while 20% were scared of it getting worse and 20% were embarrassed. As a result of the bullying, 32% of young males have experienced depression, 26% have had social anxiety, 19% have had suicidal thoughts and 14% have self-harmed.

The survey also found that those who identify as being male or had grown up in a male-dominated household were more likely to bully than those who identify as female or who have greater female influences at home.

In addition, Ditch the Label and social intelligence company Brandwatch evaluated 19 million tweets from the US and the UK over a span of four years in order to better understand the current climate of what it means to be a man, as expressed across social media. The report found that 1 in 3 of all discussions associated with masculine behaviour on Twitter referenced violence and that lack of emotional response and stoicism were also associated as being masculine traits.

Liam Hackett

Liam Hackett, CEO and founder of the charity said: “Our research consistently finds that young men are under an immense amount of pressure to conform to a set idea of what it means to be a man – ideas which are incredibly toxic and interlinked with violence and stoicism. Men are more likely than anyone else to bully and less likely to talk about the issues affecting them. This is why males are more likely to engage in crime, sexual violence and suicide – because they are discouraged from talking about issues affecting them with comments like ‘stop being a girl’ and ‘man up’. Encouraging openness is a vital step forward if we want to raise a generation of men who are emotionally articulate and able to process stress and trauma in healthy, positive ways. “

Prof Robin Banerjee
Prof Robin Banerjee

Professor Robin Banerjee, Professor of Developmental Psychology at Sussex University, added: “Young men encounter an extensive and often confusing array of messages about what success means, how they should behave towards others, and what is desirable. We also know that a significant proportion of young people have experienced bullying and associated mental health difficulties as they navigate this complex social world. Research shows that the most effective strategies to support young people’s well-being bring everyone together to understand, talk about, and collectively shape the ethos and value system of our institutions and communities.”

The charity has created two new help  one for parents and one for teens looking to help their friends.
