Graham Norton supports National Diversity Awards

“Did we know that we were standing on the threshold of a very different and much darker new world?” said Moira Smyth, Winner of the positive Role Model Award for LGBT+.

Reflecting on events since The National Diversity Awards 2016, the driving force behind the LGBT+ network at Hampshire County Council expressed her uncertainty for what is yet to unfold in 2017, and how recent events across the globe will impact diversity and inclusion.

“Hints of the new world were present as we had already received the reports of hate crime in our Country, but could we see the events that have since unfolded in America? Not really.” She continued.

The National Diversity Awards are a shining light in this darker new world. Nominations opened on February 20, and organisers expect an influx of entries from community organisations and positive role models from across the UK, in a defiant stance to promote and recognise our nations unsung diversity heroes.

Funke Abimbola, Senior Lawyer and Diversity Leader, and most recently a judge for The National Diversity Awards, echoes this sentiment.

He said: “These awards are vital as they celebrate and encourage those unsung diversity heroes working tirelessly to level the playing field within our communities.”

A previous winner of the positive role model award for gender, Funke, continued: “Others can then learn from and be inspired by their example. Never has this been more important than now in our post-truth and post-BREXIT era.”

With the ever-increasing need for cohesion between communities from all walks of life, the National Diversity Awards aims to deliver this year’s grandest celebration of diversity.

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral plays host to the 2017 ceremony, on September 8 when the UK’s most inspirational and selfless people will come together to honour the rich tapestry of our nation, recognising individuals and groups from grass-roots communities.

The awards have recently announced new supporters and Microsoft are returning as Headline sponsor. The prestigious black tie event has also attracted a growing list of endorsements from celebrities who are actively supporting the diversity agenda including Sir Lenny Henry, Stephen Fry and Katie Piper.

“Promoting and celebrating diversity is close to my heart” said talk show legend Graham Norton. “Which is why I am thrilled to support The National Diversity Awards! I want to wish all of this year’s nominees the best of luck for the ceremony, you all deserve to win!’’

There can only be one winner for each of the 15 award categories; but with 20,000 nominations and votes received annually, The National Diversity Awards will without a doubt showcase the best of British diversity at such a crucial time.

Founder and CEO Paul Sesay, said: “Unlocking Britain’s diverse talent and rewarding unsung champions remains at the heart of these awards.”

Sesay, who was fostered as a young child, is the guiding light behind The National Diversity Awards, and has made it his mission to bring communities together.

He continued: “As we enter our sixth year, I know there are still so many game changers who remain unnoticed and unheard. We aim to provide a platform for those who have the passion and determination to spread the positive message of inclusivity. I look forward to learning about this year’s nominees and witnessing their spectacular journeys.”

Nominations for the National Diversity Awards, close on June 9.

PREVIEW: 45 Minutes of Organ Music with D’Arcy Trinkwon

The series is performed by the University Organist, D’Arcy Trinkwon – the internationally acclaimed concert organist regarded as one of the outstanding virtuoso musicians of his generation. D’Arcy is also organist of Worth Abbey.

These fascinating, relaxed and informal concerts include interesting verbal introductions from D’Arcy who explains all about each piece of music. The concerts are aimed to be interesting and accessible to everyone.

The organ in the Meeting House is one of the iconic instruments of its period and one of the finest organs in the South East. It was built in 1966 by Grant, Degens and Bradbeer, and its futuristic design still looks avant-garde today. It was recently fully restored by Clevedon Organs with the addition of a very modern mobile console which allows the audience to watch everything the performer is doing and be totally involved.

The series programme features ‘Toccatas’ from all periods – from the fast and the furious, the rhythmic, the riotous to the romantic, the explosive to the euphoric… And each of the concerts in the series includes one of Bach’s 5 toccatas and fugues written for organ. There are modern toccatas, baroque toccatas, loud ones, quiet ones…

New stage play from local author

The Trials of Colonel Barker, a new full-length stage play by Rose Collis, funded by Arts Council England and based on her book Colonel Barker’s Monstrous Regiment, makes its world premiere with a one-off rehearsed reading as part of the second (Brighton and) Hove Grown Festival.

The play explores some of the most dramatic events in the extraordinary and complex life of Valerie Arkell-Smith aka ‘Colonel Sir Victor Barker DSO’, who veered from tragedy to farce, from fame to obscurity, but always strove to remain ‘a perfect gentleman’.

Rose Collis

Colonel Barker’s story is one of identity: gender identity, hidden identities, class identities and the conflict between the public and the private identity.

The play is written and produced by Rose Collis, performed by Rose Collis, Keith Drinkel, Philippa Hammond and Guy Wah and directed by Thomas Everchild.

Virago published Colonel Barker’s Monstrous Regiment in 2001, to critical acclaim:

Help the Mayor raise money for his 27 local charities

Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Pete West is appealing for people to accompany him on a 50 mile cycle ride around the Biosphere boundary in the beautiful Sussex countryside.

Photo: Hugo Michiels Photography

He’ll be raising money for the 27 local charities he is supporting during his year in office.

The cycle ride will start and finish at Hove Lawns on Sunday, April 23, going east on the seafront cycle path and the undercliff, past the white cliffs before heading to Lewes, Ditchling and Hurstpierpoint.

He’ll stop at the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s site at Woods Mill for refreshments before returning to Brighton via Bramber and Shoreham.

This is a medium distance ride and most reasonably fit adults should be able to complete it. It does contain hills but it largely skirts around the edges of the Downs to avoid the worst of them. There are no Devil’s Dykes or Ditchling Beacons on the route!

Registration is £20 (covers event costs including refreshments).

The following weekend on Sunday, April 30, the Mayor will be joined by friends and supporters to create a new walking route while raising money for his 27 chosen charities.

The route will take in some of the highlights of our lovely local downland. By pioneering the new Brighton & Hove Way, the Mayor aims to make this a designated pathway for the enjoyment of all visitors to Brighton & Hove and residents alike.

The walk will start in Saltdean and there are 6 clear stages, including one with disabled access.

You can join or leave at different points along the route. The full route is just over 27 kilometers (18 miles) – one kilometre for each of the Mayor’s chosen Charities ! Walk a little or the lot – it’s up to you.

There is a suitable stage for everyone. Dogs on leads are welcome, Park Ranger/Volunteers will accompany walkers and there will be talks along the way at areas of specific interest.

Click here: to pay your £5 registration fee and select a charity to support – or select all 27!

Your chosen charity will then contact you with further details including full route timing and how to raise sponsorship money or donate.

The registration fee pays for the event costs. Any excess will go into the Mayor’s Charities Fund. Your sponsorship and donations will go directly to the charity or charities you choose to support.
