PREVIEW: The Marriage of Figaro

A new production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro is the centrepiece of the OperaUpClose autumn 2014 season.

Marriage of Figaro

The cast features Louisa Tee as the Countess, fresh from rave reviews as Violetta in La Traviata at Soho Theatre, sharing the role with Fae Evelyn, alongside a host of OperaUpClose favourites.

Rosie Bell and Sarah Minns are Susanna; Richard Immergluck and Alistair Sutherland are Figaro; Nick Dwyer and Tom Stoddart are the Count. Henry Grant Kerswell doubles up as Bartolo and Antonio and Mary-Jane de Havas plays the unusual combination of Marcellina and Basilio, with hugely talented newcomer Felicity Buckland as Cherubino.

A new orchestration for piano, viola and clarinet by Musical Director Alex Beetschen retains Mozart’s light-touch genius for drama and finds new colours in this much-loved score, while the intimate ensemble of three instrumentalists and seven singers ensures that every word of Robin Norton-Hale’s (La Bohème, Don Giovanni, La Traviata) new English version of the libretto will be communicated.

Directed by Sarah Tipple, who has revived Anthony Minghella’s Madam Butterfly for ENO and delighted audiences with her hilarious, award-winnng Barbershopera productions, with 18th-century-with-a-twist set and costume designs by Ricardo Pardo and lighting by Andrew May (La Traviata), this promises to be a highly inventive and theatrical new production.

A competition for Disability History Month

Disability History Month runs from November 22 to December 22 every year.

Sussex Police

The theme for this year will be “War and impairment” and the Social Consequences of Disablement.

With the centenary of World War 1 being commemorated all over the world, organisers want to explore the disabling effects of conflicts and how society has responded up to the present day.

The theme is inspired by WW1 but it is a very current issue, particularly as advanced medical treatment has meant that more war veterans now survive but sadly experience significant physical and mental injuries.

If you’re interested in Disability History Month (DHM) draw/paint an image of what you think war and impairment is. If you would prefer to write something (poem or prose) or make a sculpture, then this is acceptable too.

Send the finished project to S.Chatterjee, Brighton Police Station, John Street, Brighton, BN1 4ZJ.

OR scan or photograph the image/poem/prose and EMAIL:

Organisers hope to present an exhibition of these images in Brighton and Hove during DHM in November.

She hosted a public coffee morning at her office at 72 St. James’s Street, Kemp Town, Brighton on Friday, September 26 between 10 a.m. and noon.

Every day in this area 23 people receive the devastating news they have cancer.

By 2030, there will be 121,400 people living with or beyond cancer in Sussex – that’s enough to fill Brighton and Hove Albion’s football stadium nearly four times.

There are 187 Macmillan nurses and professionals working in this area and last year Macmillan’s support line helped with the questions and worries of 1,924 people from this region.

Nancy said: “I am delighted that our coffee morning today raised £125.16 for Macmillan Cancer Support. I would like to thank everyone who dropped in to enjoy some delicious home-made cake for their generosity.”

Labour set out ten key pledges for council elections in 2015

Labour leader Cllr Warren Morgan set out 10 key pledges on which Labour will fight the local elections between now and polling day in May 2015, at an event on Brighton seafront last night (September 25) attended by candidates and Party members.

Labour's Contract with Brighton & Hove

Calling the pledges a “Contract With Brighton and Hove”, Cllr Morgan said a Labour administration would aim to build at least 500 new council homes by 2019, build and run a new secondary school to avoid demand outstripping places in the city, and aim to eliminate youth unemployment through new apprenticeship schemes.

He said: “This city is crying out for change, desperate for a competent council leadership which will improve the lives of residents across the city in every community. Labour will deliver that change, setting the city council the task of tackling poverty and promoting opportunity for all.”

He promised an incoming Labour leadership would establish a year-long Fairness Commission to tackle poverty, promote opportunity and work to deliver new facilities for the city on time, in budget and without committing the city’s taxpayers to further debt. Improving the city’s refuse and recycling service will be a “top priority”.

Acknowledging the huge challenges posed by over £120 million being cut from the city’s budget by Government, Cllr Morgan said: “These ten commitments will form the foundations of our detailed manifesto next year, and the direction of travel of our Labour administration for the four years of our term of office, if elected in May.

“If you want a positive change from the Greens running the city, if you think the Conservatives have little to offer beyond more cuts and a council that does less and cares less, if you want a council that works with you to build better communities in every part of Brighton and Hove and offers greater opportunities for every resident, then say you are with us.”

Labour's Contract with Brighton & Hove

The 10 Pledges:

1. Labour will make collecting refuse, increasing recycling and cleaning the streets a top council priority. The Leader and senior councillors will directly oversee work to improve the service.

2. Labour will commit to tackle the city’s housing crisis, aiming to build at least 500 council houses by 2019 and securing 40% affordable homes in new housing developments.

3. Labour will consult on introducing a register of landlords to protect tenants in the private rented sector, promote secure tenancies and tackle “rip-off” fees through a Tenant’s Charter.

4. Labour will build a new secondary school to meet the growing need for places across the city, and it will be run by the council under powers restored by a Labour Government while working to ensure all schools are accountable and offer excellent education.

5. Labour will aim to keep any increases in council tax and parking charges within inflation-level rises, with additional income invested in public services, road safety and transport infrastructure that the city needs and residents want.

6. Labour will establish a Fairness Commission to tackle the growing poverty and inequality in the city, independently chaired, reporting within a year and funded within existing budgets, to set out an action plan  for the Labour Administration and partner organisations to implement.

7. Labour will work to support a broad, sustainable and prosperous economy that benefits all parts of the city, with secure jobs paying the Living Wage and action to combat zero-hours contracts. There will be innovative proposals in the manifesto to help small and medium-sized businesses in the city.

8. Labour will ensure that major projects that are built in Brighton and Hove offer jobs, homes and new facilities for the city, are affordable, are rigorously scrutinised and are delivered on time with private investment not taxpayer debt.

9. Labour will seek to eliminate youth unemployment in the city within four years, with real apprenticeships and career opportunities for young people.

10. Labour will aim to keep public services local and democratically accountable, with power devolved to communities. Sustainability and Co-operative principles will run through the solutions they develop to meet the funding challenges they face.

Cabaret in comfort and style comes to George Street

The newly refurbished Queens Arms opened its doors last night after undergoing an extensive refit and restyling.

Queens Arms re-opening

Walls have been pulled down, the bar remodelled and new toilets have been installed, bringing the Queens Arms stylishly into 2014 while providing Gay Brighton with its latest new venue, as it repositions itself in the international marketplace as a destination for LGBT tourists to visit and more importantly a comfortable option for local people who live in Brighton to support.

Top cabaret will be featured seven nights a week with the new alterations providing unrivalled views of the stage area from all parts of the bar.

Local personalities – including Dave Lynn, Stephanie Starlet, Sally Vate, Davina Sparkle, Jennie Castelle, Jason Lee and Maisie Trollette – brought a touch of glamour to the evening and it was refreshing to see the support shown by local licensees from Bar Broadway, Poison Ivy, A-Bar, The Black Horse, Marine Tavern, The Zone, Bar Revenge, Club Revenge, Charles Street and the Royal Oak, who turned out in force to wish manager Barry Nelson all the very best with the latest addition to Brighton’s commercial gay scene.

Brighton Trans*formed launch party

Brighton Trans*formed was launched at a reception at Jubilee Library in Brighton last night, September 24.

Brighton Trans*formed

The groundbreaking book published by QueenSpark Books chronicles the lives and experiences of Brighton and Hove’s Transgender community. It is a beautifully edited compendium of writing, memories, oral histories, design, photography and features, presenting the rich variety of Trans* lives in Brighton and Hove today, in the contributors’ own words.

The event was hosted by award-winning comedienne Claire Parker. Melita Dennert, the Chair of QueenSpark Books, congratulated everyone involved in the Heritage Lottery-funded project and thanked the Manager Kathy Caton for delivering the project.

Juliet Jacques, who wrote the foreword, said: Brighton and Hove is a place where Trans* people are increasingly seen and heard, understood and respected, and Brighton Trans*formed shows how far we’ve come and how far there is to go.'”

The book’s contributors range from 18 to 81 years old, all with very different life experiences.

All of their testimonies have in common an absolute honesty and openness. Contributors shared their joys and tragedies, adversities faced, and a display of strength and resolve to be themselves. It was striking how contributors worked through confidence issues and self-protective boundaries to appear on posters, radio and in public art and the book, in order to express what being a Trans* person in Brighton is really like.

Trans* people in Brighton have a long history, but more recently, significant developments in how the community connects and organises itself have allowed new groups to blossom, complementing the stalwart Clare Project. These groups range from peer support (FTM Brighton and Transformers Youth Group at Allsorts), to social (Trans* Pride and Trans* Swimming Club) and activism (Trans* Alliance), and have been established and led by Trans*-identified people.

A percentage from the sale of each copy sold will be donated to local Trans* groups.

For over 40 years, QueenSpark Books has been producing books about the people of Brighton and Hove, with a focus on enabling less-heard voices to tell their stories. With Brighton Trans*formed this objective was paramount.

QueenSpark Books was approached by individuals eager to be involved in a project where editorial and creative control lay firmly with the community it was seeking to represent – a community whose voices have historically been distorted, misrepresented and sensationalised.

Rory Finn, a participant in the project, said: “From young to old, many people question their gender identity, but often have no role models to turn to. This book is important, if for no other reason, because it says, “we were here”.

The book’s narrative is an overriding one of hope, not tragedy. Participants and editors sought to empower and enable the community with opportunities that, by virtue of its trans* status and all that this entails, had previously been unforthcoming.

This is what community projects, public art and oral testimony can do. Brighton Trans*formed was made possible with Heritage Lottery funding support.

PREVIEW: ‘A Spy among Friends, Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal’

The true, untold story of Kim Philby, history’s most famous traitor.

Ben Macintyre
Ben Macintyre

Bestselling author, journalist and TV presenter Ben Macintyre will talk on his new book, A Spy Among Friends, Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal, on Sunday, November 16 as part of the prestigious Bletchley Park Presents series of talks.

With access to newly released MI5 files and previously unseen family papers, and with the cooperation of former officers of MI6 and the CIA, this definitive biography unlocks what is perhaps the last great secret of the Cold War.

Kim Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet mole in history. Agent, double agent, traitor and enigma, he betrayed every secret of Allied operations to the Russians in the early years of the Cold War.

Philby’s two closest friends in the intelligence world, Nicholas Elliott of MI6 and James Jesus Angleton, the CIA intelligence chief, thought they knew Philby better than anyone, and then discovered they had not known him at all.

This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery, class and conscience; of an ideological battle waged by men with cut-glass accents and well-made suits in the comfortable clubs and restaurants of London and Washington; of male friendships forged, and then systematically betrayed.

Ben is a columnist and Associate Editor with The Times and has worked as the newspaper’s correspondent in New York, Paris and Washington. He is the author of nine previous books including Agent Zigzag, shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award and the Galaxy British Book Award for Biography of the Year 2008, the no. 1 bestseller Operation Mincemeat and most recently the Richard and Judy bestseller Double Cross.

He lives in North London with his wife and three children.
