United Nations (UN) rights experts have condemned Uganda’s ‘egregious’ anti-LGBTQ+ legislation after all but two of the country’s 389 MPs passed a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which introduces capital and life imprisonment sentences for gay sex and the “recruitment, promotion and funding” of same-sex “activities”.

The protest coincided with Uganda’s legislators proposing a “vicious” new Anti-Homosexuality Bill.
Thirty-two out of 56 Commonwealth member states criminalise same-sex relations, in defiance of the “toothless” Commonwealth Charter. Seven have life imprisonment and only recently the “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” has returned in Uganda.
Uganda recently passed the so-called Sexual Offences Bill which implements harsher punishments for LGBTQ+ citizens.
