The site has a long history as an entertainment venue having been first built as an indoor ice rink in 1896/97. The Hippodrome has undergone some major alterations over the years and was used as a live music venue until 1964. In 1969 it reopened as a bingo hall before falling into disuse in 2007.
Brighton and Hove City Council will hold a debate about the future of the Brighton Hippodrome at a full council meeting on March 26. The debate has been triggered by a petition signed by more than 4,288 people calling on the council to support the venue returning to live theatre. 1,250 signatures were needed to trigger a debate.
