The purpose of the trip was to demonstrate to the Minister the conditions faced by communiters from Brighton daily.

Simon was able to show the Minister just how busy the early morning trains from Brighton to London are highlighting the need for greater capacity on commuter trains which could be achieved by lengthening trains.

Simon raised the issue of the need for Wifi provision on more trains to and from London, as many other operators now have Wifi availability. Simon also took the opportunity to raise issues of the general reliability and cleanliness on trains.

As Stephen Hammond has special responsibility for major rail projects Simon also raised the issue of the reinstatement of the Lewes to Uckfield line which would ease congestion and provide a diversionary route whilst maintenance work is carried out on the Brighton Main Line.

Simon said: “I invited Stephen Hammond to join me on my commute from Brighton to London to highlight the many issues that commuters have raised with me. As someone who regularly uses trains to travel between Brighton and London I have experience of the issues that commuters from Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven face, and I thought that it was only right that the Rail Minister experience these too.”

“It was a great opportunity to show the Minister the major issues of commuting between Brighton and London rather than writing to him or speaking in Parliament. Today’s commute will give Stephen Hammond a much greater understanding of commuter issues in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven. I intend to keep pressing for a better deal for my hard-working, constituents.”
