The results suggest there has been an increase in the percentage of pupils achieving English and maths at grade 5 or above – from 47% in 2019 to 50% in 2023.
Both the government and exam regulator Ofqual have referred to the 2019 and 2023 figures as a benchmark in terms of ‘getting back to normality’.
Commenting on this year’s GCSE results, the co-chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children, Families and Schools Committee, Councillor Lucy Helliwell, said: “I’d like to congratulate all our GCSE students on their achievements today.
“Their excellent results are despite the challenges these young people have faced.
“I wish them all the best in whatever further education or training they opt for.
“I’d also like to thank all our schools for their hard work and dedication to fulfilling the potential of our city’s students.”
The chair of the city’s Secondary Headteacher Group, John McKee, added: “Brighton & Hove secondary headteachers are jointly celebrating the achievements of our students.
“Schools have worked in partnership, closely and collaboratively, to ensure that every child in our city has access to a good education and is able to make strong progress.
“We take collective responsibility for a set of exams results that reflect great levels of attainment and achievement across all schools in Brighton and Hove.
“Today’s results reflect the hard work and tenacity of fantastic group of students, and an unerring commitment from all schools to joint practice development and partnership for the benefit of every young person in our city.
“We are extremely proud of the ‘Class of 2023′ and wish them all the very best for the future.”
