Brighton Pride without the Brighton’s Gay Men Chorus (BGMC) would be like a song without a melody or a vodka without a tonic, which is why they have been invited for the first time ever to sing on the Pride main stage this year.
The chorus was formed in 2005 as a space where gay men could sing and socialise. They have gone on to win the hearts of many, featuring on the BBC’s Last Choir Standing and starring at the Barbican while all the time building a loyal audience in Sussex and beyond.
BGMC trustee Adam Betteridge said of the choirs forthcoming Pride plans: “The Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, as a registered charity, is entirely aligned with Brighton Pride’s crucial aims in promoting and celebrating the very best that Brighton & Hove has to offer both LGBT people and their friends, as well as the wider ambition of highlighting the many issues that LGBT people are confronted with on a daily basis around the world”.
“In the run up to the main Brighton Pride weekend, we are encouraging our more sporty members to enter a team for the Pride Sports Day on July 27, which will be followed by a performance at the MCC Community Service in the Brighthelm Centre on the same day. And of course we always look forward to putting on a good show during the Pride Parade! With the overall theme being ‘The Whole World’s A Disco’, we have decided to dedicate our float to ABBA’s 40th anniversary Eurovision win at Brighton Dome back in 1974”.
“We are over the moon to be performing the Main Stage at Pride in Preston Park, a first for the guys and something we have hoped to do for some time now! We are also intending on having an information stand in the Community Fair on the same day for people who are interested in learning more about our activities. It’s going to be a busy few weeks for sure!”
“At the very heart of all our activities is the fundraising work we do. This is a crucial part of Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus’ objectives as a charity in its own right, and every year we help raise many thousands of pounds for other organisations such as The Sussex Beacon, The Rainbow Fund, Lunch Positive, as well as lesser known charities such as Shine Theatre Group and Wolfram Syndrome UK. We are so fortunate to be working with the current Pride team who are so clearly striving to put community and charitable fundraising back at the heart of Brighton Pride”.
