Older and LGBTQ? You’re welcome here!

Victoria Nursing Group awarded Silver Award for welcoming LGBTQ people to their service.

MANY older LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people find themselves having to go ‘back in the closet’ when they enter supported living arrangements like nursing homes, but one group of care homes in Brighton and Hove are making sure that this isn’t the care for their residents.

Brighton-based LGBTQ charity Switchboard’s pioneering new LGBTQ Inclusion Award celebrates the first Nursing Home Group’s achievement of a Silver Award, joining the growing number of health and care settings across Sussex who have achieved an award for being welcoming to LGBTQ people.

Victoria Nursing Group are the first organisation of their kind of commit to making their service LGBTQ inclusive through a combination of training and making changes to their care homes, policies, and practices.

They have just been awarded a prestigious Silver Award by Switchboard for LGBTQ inclusion. This award means that their residents, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, will have a positive experience of their care and they will remain connected with the wider communities in the city.

There are an estimated one million LGBT+ people over the age of 55 in the UK. Evidence still suggests that older LGBTQ people feel unable to be open about their identities in health and social care settings.

Working closely with Switchboard, Victoria Nursing Group has confronted this issue in all three of its Hove-based homes by training over 75% of staff in LGBTQ Awareness and Inclusion, as well as introducing tools like pronoun badges and building links with LGBTQ services and support groups in the city. LGBTQ residents will now see their identities reflected in things like reading materials and posters, as well as being able to talk to staff about their experiences and their needs.

Emma Sheriff, Victoria Nursing Group’s Care Quality Director said; “We are delighted to be accredited the Silver level LGBTQ Inclusion Award. The award is important to us in terms of both our staff and residents recognising our commitment to equality and inclusion. The teams have worked extremely hard to achieve the Silver Inclusion Award.  Staff have been incredibly supportive in assisting with the re-design of our equal opportunities monitoring form, coordinating training & speaking to staff about their understanding of our ‘preferred pronoun badges’.”

Daniel Cheesman, Switchboard’s CEO, added: “We are pleased to be able to award Victoria Nursing Group with the LGBTQ Inclusion Award and are encouraged to see how they have worked hard to involve staff and residents in making their homes LGBTQ inclusive.  At Switchboard we are passionate about making positive changes for all LGBTQ people including those who are in their older years who will have experienced a time where it was illegal to be themselves.  This makes working with organisations such as Victoria Nursing Group so special as it is making a real difference in the lives of many.”

Shadow Home Secretary visits Rainbow Hub on St James Street to listen to community concerns

Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott MP, visits the Rainbow Hub on St James Street to discuss recent violent attacks on local gay men with elected community representatives.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, the MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven accompanied Ms Abbott, the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987 to the meeting.

Ms Abbott heard from Billie Lewis, the volunteer elected Chair of the LGBT Community Safety Forum, about community concerns regarding recent violent attacks on LGBT+ people in St James Street and the reluctance of some people to report both Hate Crime and violent attacks to the police because they “feel nothing will be done”.

Representatives from the BAME and Jewish Communities other minority were present and speakers from the International Women’s Network, and the migrant group, Voices in Exile, the Brighton Table Tennis Club, and the City of Sanctuary, all engaged in an open and frank round table discussion with the Shadow Home Secretary.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven said: “It’s really important to have Diane here to talk about community safety issues, particularly after the recent hate crimes in St James’s Street.”

“In Brighton and Hove we’ve seen a 108% increase in violent crime since 2011. In the first quarter of this year we’ve had more than 5,739 incidents of violence recorded – an increase of 6% since the previous year.

“Recently there has also been a worrying trend of attacks in the Kemptown area around our LGBT+ venues.

“I asked Diane Abbott to come to the The Rainbow Hub to hear directly about our concerns and what we’d like to see from a Labour government.”

He continued: “Austerity has placed an incredible burden on our city which we are seeing take effect with the statistics.”

Ms Abbot acknowledged there had been a national rise in hate crime including in the LGBT+ communities.

She said: “People know the police have done a lot to counter this but a lot of people are not reporting hate crimes and the level of hate crime is higher than police know.”

She added that the Labour party were “very keen to reach out to all minority communities and work with them” to encourage the reporting of hate crime.

During the meeting Ms Abbott met and spoke with members from minority communities in Brighton including people who volunteer at The Rainbow Hub and representatives of refuge groups.

Billie Lewis, elected volunteer chair of the Brighton and Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, said: “Hate and violent crime affects us all, albeit in different ways. From our point of view it was good to talk to other minority groups within the city.

“By joining together you have more people with shared experiences.

“I am particularly  delighted that volunteers from the Jewish and BAME communities have signed up to volunteer for the new Community Guardian Volunteers project.”

Meet the Team – Join the Team!
As anyone who has ever organised an event will know, there never a dull moment and attention to details really matters.

Everyone who helps create and run Brighton Bear Weekend is a volunteer, with all surpluses from the event being donated to the Brighton Rainbow Fund, the umbrella charity that supports numerous LGBT+ and HIV organisations across the city.

Chris Gull, who Chairs the Brighton Rainbow Fund, says; “The funds raised over the weekend are the result of months of planning, and really hard work from the volunteers – we’re so grateful for that, and so are the hundreds in our communities that benefit. Working To Connect, Brighton’s network of LGBT+ and HIV+ community organisations will hold an LGBT+ Volunteers Fair at Friend Meeting House on June 6.

Each member group depends on the time, skills, good will and determination of people within the communities they serve who volunteer with them.

Everyone welcome at Martlets Volunteer Open Day

Martlets encourages people along to its Volunteer Open Day on Saturday, April 27.

THE day will showcase the different opportunities available, how volunteering impacts on the services that Martlets can provide and the additional benefits to individuals from volunteering.

The Volunteer Open Day will take place at the hospice on Wayfield Avenue between 10am and 3pm and Martlets will be welcoming everyone from all ages, backgrounds and experience as there are many different roles available to volunteer.

On the day there will be opportunities to meet key members of staff, take a tour of the hospice and participate in activities. Current Martlets volunteers will be also be available to discuss what they do and how volunteering has helped them to learn new skills, make new friends and create a stronger connection with their communities.

Martlets is aiming to show local people how easy it is to get involved in volunteering with roles available to suit everyone’s talents and interests.

Volunteers could be doing anything from helping at a fundraising event, tending to the hospice garden, running art and crafts activities, driving patients to appointments or volunteering in Martlets shops or distribution centres.

Volunteers are vital to the care and support that Martlets give people with terminal illness and their families in Brighton and Hove and surrounding areas.  Whether people are able to offer a few hours once in a while or a regular weekly shift, anyone who becomes part of ‘Team Martlets’ plays an important role in helping to keep the hospice running smoothly.

Georgia Ellick from the hospice’s People Services Team said: “We are so grateful to our amazing volunteers for giving us their precious time to help in so many different ways across Martlets.

“We offer a very welcoming friendly environment where people can develop skills and enjoy new experiences. Many volunteers may have had a personal experience of our hospice, others may just have heard about us and want to help a local charity.  We’d welcome everyone to come and see us at our Volunteer Open Day and come and find out more.”

Trish Rendel

Trish Rendel, a gardening therapy volunteer, added: “I’ve met some really nice people whilst I’ve been volunteering at Martlets.  Everyone is so friendly here and you feel like you are appreciated and valued.

“When I heard that the hospice was setting up a horticultural therapy Sow and Grow group; I used to have my own gardening business, so I said that I had experience and signed-up straightaway. The group meets regularly to sow seeds, transplant seedlings and talk about plants, it’s all very social so there’s always lots of chat going on and we finish with a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake!”

Alex Mahoney a keen gamer who spends two days a week testing donated computer games and checking games consoles for Martlets said: “It’s probably one of the more unusual volunteering roles. However, we get all sorts of games and consoles donated to us and we need to know that they work before we can sell them on to raise money for the hospice.

“I play games a lot at home, so I know when something’s not working properly and it’s great to be able to use my gaming knowledge in a good way to help a charity. Volunteering is helping me to gain experience of working and it’s shown me an area of work that I might like to try in the future, which I hadn’t thought of before.”
