Riders, who have collectively cycled over 1 million miles, to benefit from 120 new bikes arriving this month.

BTN BikeShare announce today that the scheme is further expanding, with 120 new bikes rolling out in the coming weeks.

This development is in direct response to customer demand, meaning that more bikes will be available to the scheme’s growing user base.

The award-winning scheme, has seen upwards of 69,000 users making over 560,000 trips since it launched in September 2017. Together, users have now ridden over 1 million miles – announced on the bike share’s social channels last week.

Further hubs have already been installed in the west of the city, on Preston Street, Connaught Road and Portland Road, including a ‘virtual hub’ outside Portslade train station.

The most recent hub was added just last week and services Rottingdean, a much-requested location. Additional sites are planned for later this year, with the aim to reach even more members of the community who will benefit from bike sharing.

Tim Caswell, MD of Hourbike, the company operating the scheme, said: “We’re thrilled to be expanding BTN BikeShare and hope that it will encourage even more people to cycle in and around Brighton & Hove. Thanks to the ongoing support from Brighton & Hove City Council we will have an additional 120 bikes in circulation, allowing us to service even more residents, commuters and visitors without impacting the availability of the bikes elsewhere in the city.”

Be a Hero for Hastings Pride – they need your vote!

Hastings Pride were invited by the national lottery and ITV to take part in the People’s Project awards.

OUT of hundreds of applications Hastings Pride has reached the final five for the Meridian East ITV region.

Three out of the five finalists can now win up to £50,000 for their community projects which will be decided by a public vote.

Natasha Scott, Arts & Entertainment Director for Hastings Pride said; “We are so thrilled to have this incredibly exciting opportunity. We said after the disaster of last year that we would come back even bigger and even stronger this year. If we can get the support and most importantly the votes, then this amazing opportunity will help us to do exactly just that.”

Last year the festival site had to be abandoned due to the severe weather conditions with the winds getting beyond safety levels and organisers were left with no choice but to close due to public safety. Performers were relocated to bars within the Trinity triangle area at On the Rocks and the Owl and Pussycat who were two of last years sponsors of Hastings Pride.

Natasha went on to say; “If we are successful with the public vote, we will keep Hastings Pride as an outdoor festival, but it will mean that we can keep people safe from the elements by getting a big top marquee that can hold up to 3,000 people. To our knowledge that will mean that Hastings Pride will be the only open-air Pride that is Free to attend but safe from the weather. It means that people won’t have to look out their windows to make a last-minute decision about whether, or not, they will come along to Hastings Pride.

“Hastings Pride is so important as, each year, we see the huge positive impact it is having within our communities in breaking down the social barriers that have caused the most awful damage to people’s life chances, sense of loneliness and mental health, and the overall impact this has on their quality of life and happiness.”

This year’s Hastings Pride is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots which went on to spark LGBT+ movements all around the world.

Natasha continued: “That’s why we are doing this year’s theme as ‘Heroes’ because they are our heroes for standing up for LGBT+ rights. So please vote for Hastings Pride in the Lottery and ITV People’s Projects and get all your friends, family and even your neighbours to vote for us. Help us become even bigger and better and be our heroes of today and vote for Hastings Pride.”

Voting commences at 9am on April 1 and closes midday on the April 15. ITV Meridian news will be broadcasting about Hastings Pride during the 6 O’ clock news on Wednesday April 3.

Women firefighters – the added risks

Dr Alan Richardson
Dr Alan Richardson

More female firefighters are being hired but new research, co-led by the University of Brighton, suggests that fire services need to ensure appropriate consideration is given to female specific needs.

MORE than 800 women firefighters from 14 different countries, 255 in the UK, told researchers via an online survey that they face injury, illness and heat illness risk at similar rates to that of male firefighters. The report said specific issues such as protective equipment, clothing, health issues and long-term training need further consideration and improvement.

The study coincides with national news reports claiming women firefighters in the UK were being put in danger by having to wear suits designed for men.

The study recommended all countries should make female-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) available to staff, and they should include women firefighters in the consultation phase of PPE procurement.

“There is also a need for female-specific strength and conditioning support to support career longevity. Services should consider their facilities, support, and education of women firefighters in regard to menstrual cycle phases and menopause.

“Finally, there is concern from women firefighters about the risk of cancer and fertility, which clearly needs greater research.”

The research, Women Firefighters’ Health and Well-Being: An International Survey, is published by Elsevier:

The study found the availability of female-specific PPE was, in fact, greatest in the UK (66%) compared with other groups (42%). But it concluded: “There is a need for female-specific strength and conditioning support and facilities to decrease injury and illness risk and improve longevity. Research and education into gynecological issues, heat exposure, and their effects on women firefighters’ fertility and cancer risk is required.”

Dr Alan Richardson, Principal Lecturer in Exercise & Environment Physiology in the University of Brighton’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, based at the Eastbourne campus, collaborated with experts from The Netherlands, USA, and Australia for the research.

Dr Richardson said:This study aimed to identify specific health and well-being issues that women firefighters may experience as part of their daily working practices.

“Despite a growing body of research for male health in fire services, currently there is limited work on the specific health needs of women.

“Issues identified from this under-represented population can drive future research, education, and strategy to guide safety and health practices.”

NAT calls on London Mayor to intervene in PrEP row

National AIDS Trust (NAT) reveal further delays in London to the essential HIV prevention drug PrEP being made available in the capitols Sexual Health Clinics.

NHS England announced yesterday (April 1 ) that whilst a doubling of places on the PrEP Impact Trial (proposed on January 23) will be implemented in all participating sexual health clinics outside of London, local authority commissioners in London boroughs are still considering their response to the proposed additional places.

The expansion of the PrEP trial was announced without extra resources being made available to finance the extra places on the trial by NHS England/Department of Health.

London Boroughs’ sexual health services are under immense funding pressure, with some having already made cuts to this years sexual health services of up to 20%. These cuts are as a direct result of the Conservatives National Austerity programme of cuts, which is why some councils haven’t been able to immediately agree to taking on all the extra places on the trial.

NHS England/Department of Health have sanctioned these extra 13,000 places on the trial but are the same people who have overseen the cuts.

Yusef Azad

Yusef Azad, Director of Strategy at NAT (National AIDS Trust), said: “The welcome significant uplift in PrEP trial places in the rest of the country stands in stark contrast to the delay in London’s response. Over half of London’s sexual health clinics are turning away gay and bisexual men in need of PrEP. Men are getting HIV as a result. We now need urgently for London’s elected leaders to take ownership of this issue. We call on all of London’s elected council leaders, all of London’s councillors, the Mayor of London and the London Assembly to intervene to ensure PrEP is accessible to everyone who needs it in the capital.”

Ian Green
Ian Green

Ian Green, Chief Executive at Terrence Higgins Trust, added: “There’s no other way to describe what’s happening around PrEP access in England than as a mess. It’s absolutely unacceptable that gay and bisexual men in London and other parts of the country are still unable to access PrEP for HIV prevention. And while we welcome additional places being made available in some sites outside of London, we’re disappointed that this isn’t happening at a significant number of trial locations.

“The stalemate on PrEP needs to be resolved urgently and we won’t stop fighting until that happens. It’s ridiculous that in London we’re still waiting for a final decision to be made a month after NHS England announced the doubling of places on the trial. Meanwhile, gay and bisexual men who are denied access to PrEP are going on to contract HIV.

“Now we’re once again calling for urgent leadership on this from NHS England, the Department of Health & Social Care and councils to find a solution for both the short and long-term. That means urgently expanding access to PrEP in England as well as committing to PrEP becoming routinely available to all who could benefit. That’s the only way to resolve this mess.”

A London Councils spokesperson responded saying: “London boroughs fully support the PrEP Impact Trial. Well over half of the trial places released so far have been through London clinics.

“We have made clear that we are committed to taking on additional trial places, but this must be delivered in a way that is sustainable, ensures continuity, and does not destabilise other critical sexual health services.

“We are in discussion with national partners over next steps and we look forward to working together to deliver the successful expansion of PrEP in the capital.”

Meanwhile gay and bi men are being denied access to PrEP and are going on to be diagnosed with HIV.
