Greens announce election candidates and invite local parties to talk about electoral alliances

Brighton & Hove Green Party announce parliamentary candidates for general election on June 8 and invites local parties to talk about electoral alliances.

Following the decision of Prime Minister Theresa May MP to call a snap general election for June 8, the Brighton & Hove Green Party has named their candidates for the city’s three constituency seats of Brighton Pavilion, Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven and Hove & Portslade, and also announced that it is writing this weekend to the city’s three Constituency Labour Parties, the Liberal Democrats, the Women’s Equality Party and others to ask for talks about electoral alliances.

As already widely reported, the sitting Green MP Caroline Lucas will be seeking re-election in Brighton Pavilion.

Caroline said: “Britain is at a crossroads. This general election will dictate the future of our country for generations. Theresa May wants a mandate to force through an extreme Brexit, with consequences that could be devastating for our environment, our economy, our world-famous health service and our city.

“In Brighton, we voted overwhelmingly to remain part of the EU and every day my constituents in Brighton Pavilion tell me just how worried they are about Theresa May’s plans. I pledge to fight tooth and nail for the best possible outcome from the EU negotiations and for the right to vote on any Brexit deal. I will stand up for EU nationals, for defending our environment and for protecting our hard-won rights.

“I will continue to fight against the privatisation of our world-famous NHS, and for more affordable housing, more renewable energy, more positive action on climate change and for air that we can breathe safely. And I will continue the fight to protect the future for our local young people, not least by supporting our city’s wonderful Save our Schools campaign, and seeking to end crippling student debts.

“The vast majority of people I speak to here in Brighton have had enough of the way politics is going in our country. The times we live in demand the bigger, bolder, fairer vision that the Green Party offers nationally and that I offer here at home. I am so proud to serve as an MP in this wonderful city and I hope that on June 8 the people of Brighton Pavilion will allow me to continue.”

Commenting on the subject of Progressive Alliances, Caroline added: “Many will know that the idea of local electoral alliances is close to my heart, and that Brighton and Hove is a city where alliances could make a very real difference to the outcome of this election. The Green Party here will be inviting other parties to talk with us and I sincerely urge those parties to join positively in such talks. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Brighton and Hove returned three MPs who do not support the Conservatives’ approach to Brexit or the dismantling of our public services, and who do support voting reform to create a fairer, more just type of politics in the city and the country.”

For Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven, the party has selected its co-chair and 2015 parliamentary candidate Davy Jones, who is also a campaigner for Progressive Alliances.

Davy said: “I am proud that I have been selected once again to represent the Green Party in Brighton Kemptown and to champion our different approach to politics, social justice and the environment. In 2015, Brighton Kemptown sadly sent a Conservative to Westminster. I would not like to see this happen again. I know that not all the other parties have yet selected their candidates for the constituency but I would like to open dialogue with any parties who share this view.  Let us see if, this time around, we can truly make a difference and at the same time send Theresa May the message that her approach to politics, Brexit and public services is not welcome anywhere in our city.”

For Hove and Portslade, the party has selected the convenor of the Green Group of Councillors on the city council, Phélim Mac Cafferty.

Phélim said: “I am delighted to stand in the general election as the Green Party candidate for Hove. It’s time for a positive and bold vision for Hove and for serious change.

“Under the watch of a Conservative Government, homelessness in our city has doubled, the environment has been abandoned and we are facing a ‘hard Brexit,’ with a non-existent opposition from Labour. The Greens are the only party to say loud and clear – Brighton and Hove will not stand for this. I want to secure a better future for our young people and our environment; to stand up for the many residents plunged into uncertainty by Brexit and the housing crisis. I will fight to protect our precious National Health Service and for an end to Tory cuts. It’s time to send a clear message to Westminster – our city will not endure more years of destructive, divisive Tory leadership.

“The Greens have been the only party locally to effectively challenge Labour and Conservatives on many issues from council cuts, to the privatisation of the NHS and air pollution. As a Councillor in the Hove area for the past six years, I know what it means to stand up for our community. I am proud of what I have achieved for local people and passionate about our city. Building on my experience as Green Group convenor, I will continue to do my best for the residents of Hove, ensuring they are represented at every level.

“As MP Caroline Lucas has shown in Brighton Pavilion, Greens are serious about challenging the Government. A vote for the Greens is a vote for local, hard-working and accountable representatives prepared to punch above our weight. This election is an opportunity to have a Green voice for Hove in Parliament.

“Vote Green on June 8th.”

BRIGHTON FRINGE PREVIEW: According to Angelica@The Old Courtoom

According to Angelica takes a fresh look at Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet from the Nurse’s point of view, offering up a rich back story and an explanation of how she came to be Juliet’s nurse.

Recounted from a lively market stall, the play explores themes of motherhood and what it means to be the outsider. A warm and considered interpretation of this timeless classic.

Devised, written and performed by Mjka Scott, According to Angelica offers a unique version of events, as told by Nurse Angelica who, despite having a prominent role and tangible warmth with Juliet in Shakespeare’s version, remains elusive and silenced by the end of the play.

Scott fills in some of the subtle gaps left by the text and deals with some unanswered questions about the one individual who was, arguably, the closest person to young Juliet.

According to Angelica looks playfully and tenderly into the role of “nurturing” and goes beyond the purely biological fact of mother-daughter relations.

Event: According to Angelica by Mjka Scott

Where: The Old Courtroom, 118 Church Street (side entrance), Brighton

When: May 5,6 & 7

Joss Stone to appear at Exeter Pride

Singer-songwriting sensation Joss Stone will appear at the ninth Exeter Pride, which will take place in the city on Saturday, May 13.

Joss Stone with Exeter Pride Trustee Lewis Bell

Joss, who hails from Uffculme and still lives in Mid Devon, as well as attending to support the event, says she will take to the main stage to sing a song or two at the biggest free celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) communities in the county of Devon.

Joss recently returned from her Total World Tour which has seen her perform gigs at large and small venues across many continents.

She rose to fame in 2003 with her multi-platinum album The Soul Sessions, which made the 2004 Mercury Prize shortlist.

Her second album, the similarly multi-platinum Mind, Body and Soul, topped the UK Albums Chart for one week and spawned the top 10 hit You Had Me.

Both the album and single received a nomination at the 2005 Grammy Awards while Joss was nominated for Best New Artist, in the annual BBC poll of music critics.

Joss became the youngest British female singer ever to top the UK Albums Chart.

Her third album Introducing Joss Stone, released in 2007, became her first top five album in the United States while her fourth album Colour Me Free! and her fifth album LP1 both reached the top 10 on Billboard.

Throughout her career, Joss has sold 14 million albums worldwide, establishing her as one of the best-selling artists of her time, best-selling soul artists of the 2000s and best-selling British artists of her time.

She has earned numerous accolades, including two Brit Awards and has appeared in film and television roles.

The Soul Sessions Vol 2, released in 2012, was her fourth consecutive album to reach the top 10 Billboard 200.

Joss said she is “thrilled” to be supporting Exeter Pride this year. “It will be the first Pride event that I have ever attended, and where better than at my local Pride in Exeter.

“I feel it is important to support equality for everyone and am thrilled to be taking part.

“I am sure it will be a lot of fun.”

Chris Scadden, the chair of Exeter Pride committee, added: “Exeter Pride is a celebration of the city and county’s LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) communities.

“It is about us having pride in our contributions to not just a vibrant and diverse city, but all of Devon and the city and county having pride in us.

“It’s also important that, in the 50th anniversary year of the passing of the Sexual Offences Act and the beginning of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, that Exeter and Devon show a message of hope, solidarity and support to International LGBT+ communities still facing oppression, imprisonment and often violence.

He continued: “Exeter Pride would not be possible without generous donations from local businesses, organisations and individuals and the fundraising efforts of volunteers.

“Together with generous sponsorship from our partners, we are able to keep all our daytime events free-of-charge.”

Mr Scadden thanked Pride’s hard-working trustees and committee members and the 50 volunteers who help stage the event each year adding that without their support it would not be such a success.

The ninth annual Exeter Pride will include the popular rainbow flag march starting at noon from the St Sidwell Centre down Exeter High Street to Northernhay Gardens, Exeter Phoenix, Exeter Library and Rougemont Gardens, where a packed programme of activities awaits.

IDAHOBIT: City to stand in solidarity with those persecuted in Chechnya

Brighton & Hove marks International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

IDAHOBIT commemorates the day in 1990 the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases and this year will give everyone in the city the opportunity to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters being persecuted in Chechnya.

In 86 countries globally, homosexual acts remain illegal while in many countries lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and those who identify as trans are often murdered simply for their sexuality or gender identity and alarmingly recent media reports indicate concentration camps for gay men have been opened in Chechnya.

♦   Live performances from The Rainbow Chorus and singer/guitarist AJ Paterson

♦  Poetry from Alice Denny

♦  A minute’s ‘noise’ to remember the international victims of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic violence; (so bring a whistle, horn, bell, tambourine, trombone etc to make some noise!)

♦  Guest Speakers
