Labour in Brighton & Hove to be “listening council” with regular leader’s surgeries

Graham Robson May 13, 2023

The new Labour administration on Brighton & Hove City Council has announced plans to begin leader’s surgeries and monthly walkabouts to make the Leader of the Council more accessible to residents.

Cllr Bella Sankey, the new Labour leader, wants to run regular ‘leader’s surgeries’ to give residents right across the city the opportunity to raise issues of concern with her directly, as well as partake in monthly walkabouts in different communities to see residents’ issues first-hand.

Labour won control of the city council at the local elections in May, promising to “change the culture in the local authority and lead a ‘listening council’ that does policy with residents not to them.”

Labour leader, Cllr Bella Sankey, said: “I love this city dearly and so I know that for too long residents have felt disconnected and under-served by their city leadership.

“I am going to be a listening leader and I want to be visible and accessible to residents from Portslade, to North Laine to Saltdean.

“We will only fix the problems in our city and reach our full potential if we work together and harness all the best ideas our brilliant residents have for their local communities.”
