Labour candidate Josh Guilmant wins South Portslade by-election

Labour candidate Josh Guilmant has won the South Portslade by-election with 55% of the vote, becoming the newest member to join the Labour majority administration in Brighton & Hove.

The by-election was called following the resignation of long-standing Councillor, Les Hamilton, who had served the ward for 52 years.

Josh Guilmant, said: “I am delighted to have been elected as Labour Councillor for South Portslade and grateful for everyone who turned out to vote yesterday.

“I promise to continue to build the established links with the community in South Portslade that our Labour Councillors have built over the years and to provide a strong voice for local residents.

“I look forward to joining colleagues in the Labour administration at Brighton & Hove and delivering for the city.”

Bella Sankey, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council and Labour Group, added: “The residents of South Portslade have continued to return Labour Councillors and we are extremely grateful and humbled by them doing so again.

“Josh is a brilliant candidate and I know he will make an enormous contribution as a Councillor and valued member of our administration.

“I’d like to thank everyone in South Portslade who turned out to vote for Josh yesterday, despite the cold temperatures, and put their trust in Labour once again.”

Danny John Booth, Green Party – 149 votes
Benjamin James Franks, Conservative Party – 246 votes
Jamie Rutherford Gillespie, Independent – 44 votes
Josh Guilmant, Labour Party – 874 votes
David Timothy Maples, Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition – 53 votes
Georgia Arabella McKinley Fitch, Democratic Liberation Party – 49 votes
Kenneth Lloyd Rist, Liberal Democrats – 186 votes

The turnout was 21.8% out of an electorate of 7,380.
