Following a meeting with Arthritis Research UK, Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, is encouraging people in Hove and Portslade, who are living with osteoarthritis, to find a form of physical activity they enjoy to help keep their joints healthy.

Mike recently met with representatives from Arthritis Research UK in Parliament and has agreed to raise a number of issues with his ministerial colleagues.

According to Arthritis Research UK, over eight million people in Britain have sought treatment from their GP for the pain and disability caused by osteoarthritis. This condition affects the joints, causing pain and stiffness, and there is currently no cure for osteoarthritis.

Treatments include pain killers and physiotherapy, and in some more severe cases joint replacement. Measures such as regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy body-weight play an important part in relieving joint pain and stiffness.

Mike said: “Unfortunately, joint pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis can have a major impact on people’s lives. I was interested to learn from Arthritis Research UK that at the right level exercise can ease stiffness, improve joint movement and strengthen muscles. The ‘keep moving’ campaign is an excellent initiative that I was very happy to support.”
