Sussex Police seek more volunteers to advise on LGBT issues

Sussex Police are seeking more volunteers from the community to help officers gain a better understanding of issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people across Sussex.

Sussex Police

A group of people from across the county, including councils, LGBT charities and support groups and also independent members of the public, already exists, but police would like the group to become even more representative.

Superintendent Laurence Taylor
Superintendent Laurence Taylor

Superintendent Laurence Taylor said: “External groups like this are important to us. They can help inform and shape the way we work as an organisation and enable us gain a greater insight on issues that affect our communities. We continuously work to give the highest quality service to the public and we particularly value input from the LGBT External Reference Group.”

“It is Force priority to increase the reporting of Hate Crime. To try and gain a better understanding of why people might not feel comfortable with reporting this type of incident to us, we recently worked with the group to put together a survey on LGBT Hate Crime. From this feedback we have gained a better understanding of why somebody might not report such crimes, and, if they did, how we might improve their experience of reporting.”

Sussex Police have put together an action plan to make sure that the force provides the best possible service to the LGBT community.

ALADDIN: A family panto for Christmas

Alladin

A company of Brighton’s local talented actors and performers are to stage a performance of Aladdin in support of a worthy charity, and to give local families a traditional and magical festive pantomime.

In the absence of a family Christmas show at the Theatre Royal in Brighton this year, Music Theatre 2000 is bringing to the Barn Theatre, Southwick, Brighton a traditional, magical, musical pantomime for all the family to enjoy.

Aladdin is one of the best-loved pantomimes of all time bursting with boos and cheers, songs and laughter and has a first rate cast of singing actors, dancers, a live band and a sprinkling of magic.

Rub the magic lamp, enter the cave of wonders and be transported to this fun fairytale world where you will meet the lovely Princess Jasmine, the wicked Abanazar, the hilarious Widow Twankey and a host of other characters as well as, of course, the hero of the story, Aladdin himself!

Aladdin is co-directed by Simon Gray, who also musically directs, and Nathan Potter who also choreographs. Simon and Nathan have a wealth of professional theatre experience between them and have collaborated on many successful productions including the highly acclaimed production of Cinderella at the Barn Theatre in 2011.

MT2000 will once again be supporting the Martlets Hospice which cares for over 1000 people living in and around the Brighton and Hove area with a life limiting disease where a cure is no longer possible. The hospice is not part of the NHS and needs to raise over £8000 every day to care for the patients.

The cast of Aladdin consists of experienced local singer/actors including Steve Emery (from Brighton) as Widow Twankey, Jim Upton (from Chichester) as Abanazar, Madison Horne (from Worthing) as Princess Jasmine, Karen Young (from Hove) as the Empress, Alice Crossfield (from Hove) as the Genie of the Ring, Mark Gordon (from Worthing) as the voice of the Genie and Nathan Potter and Edd Berridge (both from Brighton) as Ali and Baba, guards to the Empress. Inti Conde who plays Aladdin is originally from Hove where he went to school but is currently living in London.

The cast is complemented by a chorus of experienced singing dancers, along with children from the Brighton based Drama Queens School of Musical Theatre.

There are ten performances from December 18-24 including several matinees – check with box office for performance times.

Tickets from £13.00 are on sale now and are available from the Barn Theatre Box Office (01273) 597094

To book online, CLICK HERE:  www.southwickcommunitycentre.org.uk/the-barn.html

All children’s tickets include a free toy – flashing wands/sabres/swords or a soft toy for the under 3s.

Brighton’s LGBT choirs perform together on World Aids Day

For the first time ever all of Brighton’s LGBT Choirs came together yesterday, Sunday, December 1 at St Mary’s Church, Kemptown to perform a concert of the very highest quality on World Aids Day.

Actually Gay Men's Chorus

It has taken many years to have a single event to celebrate World Aids Day, but the wait was well worth it. The concert was sold out, the performances were excellent and queues stretched outside St Mary’ Church as people waited patiently to get in.

It is almost inappropriate to deliver a critique of the individual choirs who all contributed to a magnificent event whose theme We all live together,  said everything that needs saying and helped Brighton and Hove’s diverse LGBT communities and their friends come together in one building and celebrate the 25th anniversary of World Aids Day. However, for the record I think it is fair to say the Actually Gay Women’s Chorus almost stole the show with their beautiful rendition of Secret Love from Calamity Jane. It was a perfect choice for the event, the acoustics of St Mary’s Church and the diverse audience. Doris Day would have been very proud.

LGBT Choirs performing included: The Rainbow Chorus, the souths only LGBT choir, Brighton Belles, a new women’s choral group, Resound a male voice ensemble specialising in close harmonies, the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus, Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus and Qukulele, the queer ukulele band.

Special guests were the Theatre Workshop Chorus made up of young people from theatre schools all over Sussex who were given a thunderous reception by an appreciative audience.

The choirs returned to the stage at the end of the evening to sing Howard Alexander’s anthem You make me proud which had won an international competition run by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir to find an anthem to create the world’s largest virtual choir, called the OutPostChoir project.

The evening was a fundraiser for Lunch Positive the HIV charity who provide a healthy meal once a week for people who are HIV positive.

Tom Daley confirms he is in a relationship with a guy

Olympic bronze medalist Tom Daley confirmed the world’s worst kept secret to his two million followers on You Tube this morning, revealing he is “in a relationship with a man and could not be happier”.

Tom Daley

While not using the word ‘gay’ he said: “In spring this year my life changed massively when I met someone, and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great.

“That someone is a guy.”

Angry at being mis-quoted in an interview with a journalist earlier in the year he had decided with the support of his mother and close family it was the time to talk about his relationship.

He said: “It was not until Spring this year that everything just clicked, felt right and my world just changed”. He continued: “of course I still fancy girls but right now I am dating a guy and could not be happier. People are going to have their own opinions and make a big deal of this. Is it a big deal? I don’t think so. I just wanted to say something. I feel ready and I wanted to do it.”

He said his father who died of a brain tumour in 2011 when he was training for the London Olympics always told him the most important thing was that he was happy.

Tom said: “Right now I could not be happier. I am still Tom, I still want to win an olympic gold medal in Rio in 2016 for Great Britain and it would be great to have you guys on that journey with me too.”

Tom was named as the ‘Sexiest Man in the World’ ahead of David Beckham in this years Attitude awards.

In the new year Tom returns to TV with the second series of his hit TV show Splash.

WORLD AIDS DAY CONCERT: ‘We all live together’: Sunday December 1

Tomorrow for the first time ever, all the local LGBTQ music groups (and a few of their friends) will be performing together in a concert on World Aids Day at St Mary’s Church in Kemptown, in support of Lunch Positive, the HIV charity and lunch club who provide a healthy lunch for positive people once a week.

World Aids Day Concert

The concept of the We All Live Together concert is to emphasise the importance of life and unity within the LGBT community.

Music groups performing include:

• Rainbow Chorus

• Actually Gay Men’s Chorus

• Actually Gay Women’s Chorus

• Brighton Belles (Gay Women’s Chorus)

• Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus

• Resound

• Theatre Workshop

• Qukelele

A spokesperson for the concert organisers said: “If we think about what our community has gone through during the HIV/ AIDS era (and what better time to do this than World Aids Day), it becomes more obvious how important it is that we find and learn new ways of supporting each other. In the early 1980’s (when very little was known about HIV/ AIDS) people were suffering and dying from mystery conditions and illnesses for which appropriate treatment and care was largely unavailable. It was at that time the local community right here in Brighton and Hove recognised the plight of an increasing number of its members and pulled together to successfully set up the Sussex Beacon in 1987 – a centre whose facilities and services are considered to this day to be amongst the best of their kind.”

“And whilst today the treatments available for HIV/ AIDS and related conditions have improved considerably, the stories of all those who have lived or are living with these and other conditions are a testament to how much, when all is said and done, we really do need each other.”

“As musicians, we work within our own diverse music groups to find ways to support our fellow members. Taking that one step further, the “We All Live Together” concert provides an opportunity for us all on this crucial day in our history to publicly work alongside each other as one much larger group of musicians set within a much wider community. In so doing, we hope to offer a conscious reminder to both ourselves and others of what can be achieved when we all pull together…”

Lunch Positive celebrate World Aids Day with friends and supporters

Lunch Positive the HIV charity hosted a special lunch on November 29 to commemorate World AIDS Day.

Lunch Positive WAD lunch

The HIV lunch club welcomed 72 people including guests from partner organisations who support the LGBT community. Guests included Lawson Unit, Public Health, HIV Community Specialist Team, East Sussex Avenue Clinic, THT, HIV Chaplaincy, Peer Action, Dorset Gardens Methodist Church, MindOUT, CRI LGBT Brief Intervention, Gscene and Sussex Police LGBT Liaison.

Gary Pargeter, Volunteer Project Manager: “It’s important that we continue to recognise that despite improvements in HIV treatment, isolation, loneliness and stigma are still experienced by many people with HIV. There are still huge social and psychological challenges for people with HIV, and many still experience poorer health and well-being. We all enjoyed a fantastic gathering. It was hugely uplifting to have so many people join with us who celebrated the value and importance of togetherness. Our volunteer team did a fantastic job on what was one of our busiest lunch sessions.”
