Brighton i360 construction team starts on site

The international team who created the London Eye were reunited on Brighton seafront as they prepare to build the Brighton i360, the tallest visitor observation attraction in the UK outside of London, designed by architects Marks Barfield.

i360 construction team

Local firms including civil contractor JT Mackley, based just outside Brighton, and Hemsley Orrell Partnership (HOP), based in Hove, bring their local and marine engineering experience to the team, which comprises contractors Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (Jacobs), Hollandia from Holland, Poma from France and Marks Barfield architects from London.

They participated in a construction planning meeting at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, gearing up to start construction of the Brighton i360 this week.

The i360 passenger pod is 18 metres in diameter and has a capacity of up to 200 people at a time. The viewing pod will provide a 360 degree view through curved glass and will travel smoothly up from street level up to 138 metres above sea level before returning to beach level. With an aspect ratio of 40:1 (height to girth), the tower is a feat of cutting edge engineering combined with innovative technology and design to create the futuristic visitor attraction on the Brighton seafront.

The engineering structure, which is in effect a vertical cable car, was designed by Jacobs, a global provider of technical professional and construction services with experience in major leisure facility projects, including visitor attractions and passenger carrying rides. Jacobs and local engineering firm HOP will manage the project.

Main contractor Hollandia, who built the London Eye structure, will be responsible for the construction and erection of the steel tower in sections named ‘cans’. The tower will be constructed by jacking up each steel ‘can’, placing the next underneath until the full height of the tower is reached. This method of erection is less weather dependent than using tall cranes. The steel ‘cans’ for the tower will be transported by sea and arrive on Brighton Beach in spring to early summer 2015.

Poma, who built the 32 London Eye capsules, is a French company which manufactures cable-driven lift systems, including funiculars, aerial tramways, people movers, and surface lifts. They are responsible for the construction of the i360 pod, which will be large enough to contain 200 visitors with a birds eye view standing side by side.

The Brighton i360 will create a moving observation tower experience incorporating a restaurant, retail shop, exhibition space and conference facilities at beach level. The attraction will be run by Brighton i360 Ltd, who’s CEO is tourism expert Eleanor Harris.

David Marks and Julia Barfield, creators of the Brighton i360 and the London Eye, said: “We have the opportunity to create something truly unique and of international renown here in Brighton and Hove. We are excited to be working again with this top team and we are all look forward to seeing the opening of the attraction in summer 2016.”

Union strikes to go ahead

The NUT and Unison in local government have confirmed strike action on July 10 will go ahead.

Brighton Strikes

GMB, PCS and Unite unions in the public sector are likely to join the stike also which will see thousands of council workers, civil service staff and school support staff strike against the government’s 1% pay offer – in real terms a pay cut.

Teachers in the NUT will be continuing their campaign over 60 hour weeks, the break-up of national pay and a pension age of 68.

Wednesday, July 2: Pre-Strike Rally at Friends Meeting House starting 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome. Workers taking action and reps from other local disputes will explain why the strike is on.

Thursday July 10:  Strike Day. Pickets at major workplaces from early morning. Marches will begin from Hove Town Hall and Hollingdean Depot at 10:30am with a Rally at the Level from Midday.

Thursday June 26:  Who are the Fat Cats in Health? And who pays the price? A public meeting at the Brighthelm Centre 7.30pm to discuss how can we defend the NHS against profiteers and corporate power? Speakers include: Linda Kaucher, Ken Kirk (Brighton Keep our NHS Public) and Charles Harrity (GMB Senior Organiser). Plus updates from Unite and Unison and local Substance Misuse workers fighting to keep their service within the NHS.

Saturday June 28: Palestinian Solidarity Campaign Groups and Political Party Day: Protest at 1pm outside the Sodastream Shop on Western Road by Waitrose.

Conservatives locally are urging Council Trade Union officials to call off the strike on July 10 after figures revealed that just 8.3% of Unison members nationally voted in favour of it. Unison announced yesterday that 84,000 out of 600,000 members responded to the ballot with 58% voting in favour of a strike, representing just 8.3% support from Unison members.

Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, Leader of the Conservative group
Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, Leader of the Conservative group on Brighton & Hove CIty Council

Conservative Group Leader, Geoffrey Theobald, said: “This is hardly a resounding mandate for the Union bosses to cause further disruption and inconvenience to the city’s residents. People that I speak to are thoroughly fed up with this sort of thing following last summer’s long-running bin strike and the widespread school closures earlier in the year.

“I have the utmost admiration for those care workers, school support staff and others who do incredibly demanding jobs but the harsh reality is that the public purse simply cannot afford larger pay rises. And if we did bow to the Unions bosses demands, the Council would have to cut more jobs in order to pay for this. I call on my fellow Green and Labour Group Leaders to join with me in urging Unison and the GMB to call off this disruptive and costly strike.”

Local mental health charity receives national recognition

MindOut the Brighton based LGBT mental health project wins BBC award.

The MindOut Team
The MindOut Team

MindOut, the mental health charity run by and for lesbians, gay men, bisexual and trans people is the winner of a BBC Radio 4’s All in the Mind 25th Anniversary Award beating over seven hundred projects that were nominated for the award. The announcement come hot on the heels of MindOut winning a Golden Handbag Award on Sunday for being Brighton’s Favourite LGBT Voluntary Sector Organisation, by the readers of Gscene magazine.

Helen Jones & MindOut Chair Kate WebbMindOut was awarded the prize at a ceremony held last Thursday at the Wellcome Collection in London. Judges commended MindOut for going “above and beyond the call of duty”.

Helen Jones, Director of MindOut said: “I am so delighted and very proud. To have our work recognised in this way is very humbling. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide services to LGB&T people in Brighton and across Sussex and I am thrilled that all their hard work has been recognised in this way. I really hope this award will raise awareness of the mental health needs of all LGB&T people.”

There were three categories in the Awards:

The Individual Award, which recognises an outstandingly supportive family member, friend, boss or colleague

The Professional Award, which marks the outstanding dedication of a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, nurse, therapist or other professional and,

• The Project Award, which acknowledges the achievement of a mental health project or group that has made a big difference to people’s recovery or ability to cope.

The judging panel – chaired by BBC Radio 1 DJ and television presenter Scott Mills also featuring Charles Walker MP, clinical psychologist Guy Holmes, Star Wards founder Marion Janner and All in the Mind presenter Claudia Hammond – was inundated with entries from a wide range of people and backgrounds, but in the end they decided MindOut was most deserving of the Project Award:

Sebastian Sandys nominated MindOut for the award. Sebastian arrived in Brighton after a year-long period of poor mental and physical health. He says that the issues he was facing – the fallout from diagnoses of HIV and Hep C, the side effects of treatment, depression, anxiety and stress – had so scrambled his mind that he had been unable to articulate his needs.

His visit to the MindOut office was the first time ever he felt he was being heard and taken seriously in a safe environment. He became involved in their Allotment Project, claiming that growing carrots beats SSRI’s any day.

He commended the organisation for the speed with which they connected with him when he first got in touch, their understanding that his mental health was not separate from his physical health, and the fact that they provide a service rooted in and drawn from the lived experience of the community it serves.

The other awards went to:

• The Professional Award – Pat at Nilaari

• The Individual Award – Steve

Claudia Hammond
Claudia Hammond

Claudia Hammond said: “The great thing about presenting All in the Mind is listening to people tell their stories, knowing that they’re sharing those stories with so many listeners who relate to them personally. I started listening to Anthony Clare on All in the Mind while I was in the sixth form and never would have guessed that 25 years later I’d be presenting these awards and taking part in the programme which discusses mental health at length in a way we rarely hear elsewhere.

“We were staggered to get so many entries all those months ago. Then to be at a ceremony and see so many people in one room who had gone so far above and beyond their duty, whether as a friend or as a professional, transforming the life of another human being was very moving.

“It was very hard to choose, and for me the finalists represent everyone who has reached out to help someone else. Mental health professionals present at the awards told me that hearing these experiences reminded them that however hard their job might seem sometimes, they went into it for a reason, and that they can make a difference.”

Gwyneth Williams, Controller, Radio 4 added: “The fact that Radio 4 has a much-loved programme dedicated to mental health, psychology and neuroscience – and has done for 25 years – shows how important this area is to our listeners. The stories of kindness, bravery and dedication unearthed by these Awards are truly inspiring.”

PREVIEW: Don Juan in Soho opens tonight

Brighton Little Theatre’s next production will be Don Juan in Soho by Patrick Marber (the writer of Closer and Notes on a Scandal and the screenplay of Fifty Shades of Grey) after Moliere.

Don Juan

The play originally opened at the Donmar Warehouse in 2006 and was directed by Michael Grandage and starred Rhys Ifans in the title role of Don Juan.

The play is wickedly funny and at times touchingly emotional. Marber’s updating of Molière’s Don Juan moves the action to today’s London where this modern-day wastrel is let loose among the fleshpots of Soho leaving a trail of physical and emotional wreckage, barely noticing the lives he touches. Don Juan is an utter cad and an aristocrat who will bed anything female and attractive without a thought for the consequences.

No less of a bawdy romp than the original, the play contains strong language and scenes of an adult nature. In the original, Don Juan is condemned to a literal hell. In this modern version, Marber condemns him to a hell of his own making.

The show runs from Tuesday, June 24 until Saturday, June 28 at 7.45pm each night.
