Maurice Dobson commonly wore makeup and flamboyant fashions in a time when homosexuality was still illegal. The initiative aims to select one artist for a paid commission valued at £750, announced during February’s LGBTQ+ History Month. The chosen artist will create artwork inspired by Maurice Dobson’s legacy and explore the museum’s collections.
Jason White, Barnsley Civic’s Creative Engagement Manager, said: “This opportunity suits emerging artists, students, or recent graduates, providing a chance to step into paid commissions and the arts and heritage sector. When the Maurice Dobson Museum contacted us to ask if we’d like to work with them, we saw the project as a vital chance to increase the representation of LGBTQ+ artists locally, and to celebrate the life of a much-revered local icon.”
A representative from the Maurice Dobson Museum & Heritage Centre said: “We’re proud to be part of this fantastic initiative, it’s a fitting tribute to Maurice and we know he would be pleased too.”
