Trans Can Sport announces upcoming activities for trans, non-binary and gender variant people in Brighton & Hove

Graham Robson February 7, 2023

Trans Can Sport, the small voluntary organisation providing free and low cost sports and fitness activities to trans, non-binary and gender variant people in Brighton & Hove, has announced upcoming activities this month – from wheelchair basketball to online core classes.

Trans Can Core (online via Zoom) with Liz on Monday, 13 February, 6.30 – 7.15pm

Cost: Donation-based session

Liz returns for her popular online core class. Done in the quiet and privacy of your own home, through Zoom, Liz takes you through a 40-minute gentle class that’s designed to strengthen and mobilise your core. It’s a great workout that compliments all different kinds of sports and activities, giving you the groundwork to achieve your fitness goals. And for those of you who don’t worry about that kind of thing, this class is also really friendly and relaxing and will leave you with a smile on your face. All fitness levels welcome. Liz will offer options and alternatives where possible, so you can decide whether to take things more gently or challenge yourself.

Trans Can Wheelchair Basketball on Saturday, 11 February, 1 – 3.30pm.

Location: Kemptown, East Brighton. Costs £6.

Trans Can Sport last did this in 2019 and everyone had a lot of fun. Wheelchair experience is not required to take part as coach Ricky Perrin will teach pushing techniques ball skills, picking up a ball, passing, pushing with a ball and shooting at baskets before moving onto scrimmage, match play and fun wheelchair basketball games. All equipment will be provided including sports wheelchairs.

All levels of skill and fitness welcome. Trans participants will be offered spaces first, with remaining spaces being offered to allies attending with a trans participant closer to the date.

Trans Can Tennis on Wednesday, 15 February, 6.30 – 8pm

Location: Withdean, Brighton. Costs £5.

Trans Can Tennis will be instructed by coach Tony. The session will consist of the introduction and explanation of groundstrokes i.e. forehands and backhands. Players will be instructed on how to control the ball (as opposed to hitting it really hard!). Coaching will also include development techniques in tactical situations and if appropriate instruction on the serve. All equipment, including tennis rackets, will be provided.

Trans Can Circuits (in person) with Liz on Saturday, 18 February, 11am – 12pm

Location: Queens Park, Brighton

Costs £5

Circuit Training is one of the most efficient ways to work on and improve your fitness levels and exercise based knowledge. Liz will guide you through a 12 stations circuit, where you’ll work at your own capacity for a timed period followed by a short rest then moving onto the next station. You’ll be working in a private, dedicated gym environment utilising a variety of exercise and equipment with Liz’s knowledge and coaching experience. This session is open to all levels where you decide how gentle or intense the workout will be.
