Hit the waves with the UK’s first LGBTQ+ surf club

Graham Robson September 29, 2020

Surf Out, the UK’s first LGBTQ+ surf club based in Porthcawl, Wales will be hosting weekly surfing sessions for LGBTQ+ communities once local lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Set up by Karma Seas to provide a safe environment for LGBTQ+ people to learn how to surf and get active, Surf Out started earlier this month with weekly surf sessions but they have now been put on hold as Porthcawl has gone into lockdown, which bans people from travelling there from outside the local area.

Founder Lisa Thomas, who set up Surf Out as she found the surfing world had little to no LGBTQ+ representation in the sport, is looking forward to resuming the lessons when it is safe to do so.

Lisa said: “When you look at the surfing community internationally, hardly any professionals are out. We started looking for clubs locally to see what was in the UK and there literally wasn’t one club that catered for LGBTQ+. Its a really straight male-dominated sport internationally.”
