Have your say on proposals for a new neighbourhood hub for Moulsecoomb

Brighton & Hove Council are asking residents of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean for their help in developing proposals for a new neighbourhood hub and the redevelopment of a number of underused sites in the area

The aim is to create a new community building to improve the services and facilities available for residents of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean.
Services and facilities that could be located in the hub include a GP Surgery, Moulsecoomb Library, youth services, adult learning and a community café.
Bringing services together into a new purpose-built centre also frees up a number of sites to build up to 250 much-needed new low cost homes.
They’ve been discussing the proposals with local residents and community groups over the past year and are now holding a series of ‘planning for real’ sessions to give residents a hands-on way to have their say in what needs to be done to improve their neighbourhood.

What’s being proposed…
The proposals are to develop a neighbourhood hub building on land next to the Moulsecoomb Sports Centre, and redevelop the sites currently used by the Moulsecoomb north and south hubs and the 67 Centre.
The homes would be delivered through the New Homes for Neighbourhoods scheme building new council-rented homes across the city, the council aiming to build as many new council homes as we can. There are a number of stages to go through to progress the plans but, if approved, the development is expected to take around four years

Planning for real
‘Planning for real’ is a hands-on way of giving residents a say in what needs to be done to improve their neighbourhood.
It brings them together with planners, architects, housing officers and community workers to discuss a 3D model of the neighbourhood showing the new proposals, and work out the best way of providing what’s needed.
They are holding a number of sessions over the next few weeks.

Go along to have your say

Councillor Nancy Platts, leader of the council, said:

“This is a very exciting proposal. It’s a great opportunity to improve services and facilities for Moulsecoomb and Bevendean residents, as well as redevelop some underused sites for much-needed new low-cost housing.

“It’s an ambitious project and will be the biggest development the council has taken on for a very long time.

“We’ve had positive feedback on the idea from the community so far. We’re holding these sessions to give residents an opportunity to help shape the development.

“Residents are the experts on what an area needs, so please do come along to share your views and work with us to develop the proposals.”
