Organisers of the first ever LGBTQ+ People’s Pride Southampton Party In The Park event have arranged a full two-day festival with diversity at its heart from Saturday, June 11 to Sunday, June 12, 2022.
People’s Pride Southampton (PPS) is not commercially funded, leaving the group to have full creative control. In addition to a Pride March, the two-day festival will see speakers, poets, musicians – including American artist Jeff Paladino, Emotive Concept and Southampton-based BIPHONY – and more come together in June.
In addition to the Pride March, organisers are hosting a Community Village, a Variety Tent where famous activists and patrons of PPS such as Peter Tatchell and Sophie Cook will be giving talks, as well as specially selected workshops ranging from arts & crafts to everything in between and so much more, all for free.
The entire event is fully free to access and no tickets are required for entry, as well as that PPS has made it fully accessible for the entire weekend with BSL interpretation, a Mobiloo system, accessible toilets, a mental health drop in tent, mental health first aiders, and much more besides.
Levi Wellman, Chair of PPS, said: “We’re so excited to announce the programme for the first ever Party in The Park event, and to give organisations who want to profit off rainbows, a run for their money. Pride is for people, not for profit.”
As a charity, PPS has been operating all year round organising events from outreach stalls on Southampton City Market, family fun days to help spread the message and support others, and a Christmas meal on Christmas Day for isolated LGBTQ+ folk and their allies.
The People’s Pride March will take place on Saturday, June 11, starting at the main event gates in Palmerston Park, Southampton, SO14 1LL at 11am before proceeding through the city centre, past the historic Bargate, and ending back at the event gates in Palmerston Park, where there will be three stages, community stalls, a bar with pub prices, food stalls and much more. PPS promises that over 90% of all activities will be free to all!
The event will continue in Palmerston Park until 8pm on the Saturday and then continue on Sunday, June 12 from 11am – 5pm. Several thousand people are expected to attend the event in Palmerston Park.
