Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, has spoken of his pride in representing a large gay community in Prime Minister’s Question Time this afternoon.
Following recent comments by a UKIP Councillor that the introduction of equal marriage was to blame for flooding in parts of England, Mr Kirby said: “I am very proud to represent a large gay community in my constituency. Would my Rt Hon friend agree with me that, contrary to the beliefs of some, it is always very sunny in Brighton?”
In response the Prime Minister joined Mr Kirby in praising Brighton and paid tribute to the MP for his “vigour” in standing up for his constituents.
Mr Kirby is a long standing supporter of equal marriage, and played a key role in the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill through the House of Commons last year.
Following the session of Prime Minister’s Question Time Mr Kirby added: “I am pleased that the Prime Minister is aware of the microclimate we enjoy in Brighton, and I thank him for his kind words regarding my hard work as MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven.
“Despite the warnings of some UKIP members, I know many gay couples in Brighton will be looking forward to excellent weather for their wedding ceremonies this summer.”
