Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) that highlights the work by FareShare, Asda and its suppliers in tackling food poverty.

EDM 200 (FareShare) draws attention to the innovative partnership between FareShare and Asda in its distribution of surplus food to charities and community organisations across the UK.

FareShare is a charity that is committed to helping reduce food poverty and food waste. It provides food to disadvantaged groups and offers training to community organisations for food preparation.

Lunch Positive, the local HIV charity who provide a nourishing cooked meal once a week for people with HIV receive between 60-80% of the food produce they use weekly from FareShare for a small administration fee.

In 2012/2013 the food that was redistributed by FareShare contributed towards more than 10 million meals. Every day, an average of 43,700 people benefit from the service that FareShare provides

Mike said:

“Having seen first-hand the excellent work done locally by FareShare, I am very happy to support this laudable parliamentary motion, which credits both FareShare and Asda for their enormous achievements in tackling food poverty across the UK. I hope that raising awareness of this scheme will help to promote this kind of partnership that has been so effective in furthering such a worthy cause.”

 EDM 200 – FareShare reads:

“That this House acknowledges the innovative partnership between FareShare, Asda and its suppliers to distribute 1,500 tonnes per year of surplus chilled and fresh food to charities and community organisations across the UK; commends Asda’s donation of £100,000 to grow FareShare’s capacity to receive this additional food which is a 41 per cent increase in the total amount of all food currently redistributed by FareShare in a year; recognises the excellent work of Asda and FareShare in both reducing food waste and tackling food poverty; and notes that this is the first national partnership of its kind on this scale and a model of best practice for the UK grocery retail sector, providing up to 3.6 million meals per year and saving the charity FareShare £4.5 million, freeing up much-needed money for investment in other essential services.”
