Gaydar Radio closes down

Besi Besemar January 7, 2013

WEB.220.Gaydar Radio has shut down its LGBT community radio service and the DAB licenses the station has used in the London and Brighton area have been given to Gaydio, a Manchester-based community radio service who claim they are now the largest gay radio station in the world with their new enlarged broadcasting area and inherited Gaydar audience.

GaydarRadio began as a online radio station in 2001, however owners QSoft Consulting say that making an online/digital-only radio station pay is “incredibly challenging”, and operating the radio service is preventing them from fully investing in their core online dating business.

Programme Director of Gaydio, Toby Whitehouse, said:

‘Taking over these licences is a terrific opportunity for us. Gaydar had a large and loyal audience and we’re working hard to deliver a service that people will love.’

Gaydio took over operation of the two digital radio licences (on London and Sussex Coast multiplexes) at 7am this morning. Chris Holliday and Emma Goswell  (‘Chris and Emma at Breakfast’) were the first voices on the newly expanded service, which now identifies as ‘Gaydio, the Beat of Gay UK’.

Programme Director of Gaydio, Toby Whitehouse said, ‘Taking over these licences is a terrific opportunity for us. Gaydar had a large and loyal audience and we’re working hard to deliver a service that people will love.’
