Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, is backing an Early Day Motion (EDM) celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Government’s official recognition of British Sign Language.

EDM 1167 (10th Anniversary of Recognition of British Sign Language), while noting the significance of the 10th anniversary of British Sign Language (BSL), highlights the difficulties still facing deaf people across the country in accessing basic services and calls for action to be taken to increase BSL users’ participation in and contribution to society.

Mike said:

“I can only imagine how incredibly difficult it must be for those who have lost their hearing to get on with everyday tasks, which is why I fully support the calls in this Early Day Motion to identify what barriers still remain for BSL users within Government Departments so that these can be addressed. I am sure that my ministerial colleagues will take this matter seriously and will no doubt commission the necessary report.”
