The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland today voted to allow the ordination and appointment of ministers in same-sex relationships despite threats from ministers to quit the church if the vote was successful.

The decision needs to be ratified at next years general assembly in Edinburgh.

The move has been welcomed by the Equality Network, Scotland’s national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality charity, who say it is positive step forward for a more equal society.

Tom French, Policy Coordinator for the Equality Network, said:

“We welcome this decision by the Church of Scotland, which is particularly important for the many LGBT people within the Church and their friends and family. This is a positive step forward for a more equal society, and speaks to the progressive values of 21st century Scotland.”
