Brighton & Hove’s Artists Open Houses festival to celebrate 40th Anniversary in May

Graham Robson January 17, 2022

2022 will be a very special year for Brighton & Hove’s Artists Open Houses (AOH) festival as it celebrates its 40th Anniversary.

Brighton & Hove AOH the originator of the Open House movement, dates back to 1981 when an artist from the Fiveways area of Brighton, Ned Hoskins, opened his house to the public to view his work, and that of a group of friends. Other artists in the area followed suit to form the Fiveways Artist Group. In a city full of creatives, the idea proved popular and soon AOH sprung up all over the city.

The AOH festival is now the largest event of its kind in the UK with around 200 houses and studio spaces across the city opening their doors for the main festival in May and around 60 opening during the Christmas festival. Over 2,000 artists and makers share their work and homes each year.

The 2022 May Festival will take place over four weekends in that month: 7/8, 14/15, 21/22 and 28/29.

Registration is now open online, and artists have until February 21 to register for the 2022 AOH Festival. Artist registration is now open to every artist’s house, studio, gallery, community centre or venue within the 01273-telephone code area.

If you live outside the 01273 area you can still take part in the festival by becoming a ‘guest artist’ and exhibiting your work in someone else’s house. Simply sign up to the Artists Seeking Houses section on the AOH website.

Katherine Richards Art Gallery is announced as the 2022 AOH Student Bursary sponsor. Katherine Richards Art Gallery is offering a student bursary as part of the gallery’s sponsorship of AOH. The student bursary will support a special exhibition of students’ work, as a strand of AOH’s 40th Anniversary celebration exhibitions at the Regency Town House during the AOH May festival. The students, selected from University of Brighton’s second year sculpture course, will additionally benefit from Katherine Richards mentoring, offering her invaluable real-world experience and professional knowledge in the worlds of interior and theatre design.

Katherine Richards Art Gallery joins other AOH sponsors Hamptons International, Laurence Art Supplies and Gemini Print Group.
