Glasgow 2014 sets standard for LGBTI inclusive games

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games have been praised by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) campaigners for their inclusiveness and visibility of LGBTI issues.

Equality Network

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games have set a new benchmark on inclusion and visibility of LGBTI people, including:

• Rainbow flags flying at Scottish Government, local government and trade union premises all over Scotland.

•  The inclusion of a same-sex kiss in the Games opening ceremony, seen by hundreds of millions across the globe.

• Unprecedented high level positive statements on LGBTI equality and human rights by the First Minister Alex Salmond, Cabinet Secretary for Commonwealth Games Shona Robison, and Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop.

•  Scottish Government funding for the first Commonwealth Games Pride House, a space for LGBT people to enjoy the Games.

• Engagement on LGBTI human rights issues across the Commonwealth, including an international conference held by the Equality Network and partner organisations on 18th July in Glasgow, attended by over 150 human rights activists including speakers from around the world.

• A major exhibition created by the Equality Network, ‘LGBTI People of the Commonwealth’, highlighting the challenges facing LGBTI people in each of the 53 Commonwealth countries, and the work of their national LGBTI organisations.

• The launch of the Scottish Government’s One Scotland campaign during the Games, with its Equal Scotland theme and high-profile advertising across the country. To view, CLICK HERE:

The Equality Network, Scotlands equality campaigning charity along with other LGBTI equality organisations, spent more than a year preparing for the Games, engaging positively with the Scottish Government and Glasgow 2014 to ensure LGBTI issues across the Commonwealth were not forgotten during the games.

Scott Cuthbertson

Scott Cuthbertson, Community Development Coordinator for the Equality Network, said: “In no previous games has the visibility and inclusion of LGBTI people been so high. From the new ‘Glasgow kiss’, leadership on LGBTI issues from the top of the Scottish Government, and rainbow flags being flown across Scotland, to opportunities to talk about the Commonwealth human rights record on LGBTI equality, the Glasgow 2014 games have set a standard for LGBTI visibility and inclusiveness which we hope future games will build upon.

“There is much to be done by the Commonwealth Secretariat and member countries to ensure human rights for LGBTI people across the globe, and we hope the Glasgow 2014 Games will be seen as part of a movement for positive change. We’re already reaching out to LGBTI groups in Gold Coast in the hope momentum is kept up.”

The Equality Network’s ‘LGBTI people of the Commonwealth’ exhibition will leave Glasgow at the end of the Games, to begin a national tour. The exhibition will give people the opportunity to learn more about what life is like for LGBTI people in the 53 Commonwealth nations where 42 of the 53 member countries criminalise same-sex activity.

Matthew Cutler, Project Director, PrideHouse Toronto, added: “When the vast majority of Commonwealth states criminalize homosexuality, and as millions watch live, it is no small feat to show same-sex affection and to celebrate same-sex marriage in the opening ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games.

“As we prepare for the 2105 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Toronto, we will look to the Glaswegian games as a strong example of how multi-sport games can provide a platform to advance inclusion and human rights for LGBT people.”

Nancy Platts says fire cuts a false economy!

Labour parliamentary candidate says cutting the fire service is a false economy and claims funding is available.

Following the Governments annnouncement of £2 million pounds to restore Eastbourne Pier following being gutted by a fire last week, Nancy Platts, the labour candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven claims this illustrates that funding was available to avoid the £750,000 of cuts to the fire service in Brighton and Hove.

The cuts were voted through by Conservative, Liberal Democrat and UKIP Councillors from outside the City of Brighton and Hove at the Fire Authority meeting on June 5 and will result in the loss of one of only five fire engines and 24 firefighters who provide fire and rescue services in the City of Brighton and Hove.

Nancy Platts, Labour parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven said: “The fire on Eastbourne pier must have been devastating for the local community and I am sure the pledge of Government funding of £2m to restore it will be very welcome; but the fact that £2m was available so quickly will surely leave the residents of Brighton and Hove feeling bemused after the decisions in June to cut our local fire service back to the bare bones.

“I trust that the Chief Fire Office and the Councillors on the Fire Authority will be writing to David Cameron asking him to find a further £750,000 which is all that is needed to avoid the loss of essential front line services in our City. ”

Simon Herbert, Chair of East Sussex FBU, added: “Firefighters worked extremely hard to bring the very serious Eastbourne pier fire under control so quickly and to save a large part of the pier is a testament to their hard work, especially in the initial stages of the incident.

“Cutting the Fire Service to save money is a false economy. The business and financial losses to the tourism industries far outweigh any of the savings that are being made through fire service cuts. Fire already costs local businesses over £6m a year. Tourism generates over £704m each year, any increase in the severity of fire will massively increase costs to local businesses and negatively impact tourism income.

“When a fire engine is removed from the City, there will be insufficient appliances available day or night to deal with even a small fire on the Pier. In order to tackle an incident on the pier, resources would need to be brought in from neighbouring areas. This would delay rescues and our ability to extinguish fire, leading to a more severe fire, with far more damage and a far greater cost to society and businesses. The knock on effect must not be underestimated.”

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, commented: “I have consistently opposed reducing fire engine cover for our area and was very saddened when the UKIP councillor who chairs the Fire Authority voted for these reductions to front line services.

“I have always argued that the fire authority should look again at reducing back office costs, working with other authorities on shared services to lower costs and not assume reductions in services are automatically necessary, especially after a recent increase in Council Tax.

“I am also concerned that the way in which the Newhaven Fire Station will be operating could leave East Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven with cover that is unpredictable, potentially endangering residents. This is particularly concerning for the elderly and young families.”

Pride statement: This is why we do it – Freedom to live

Following the delivery of an amazing community parade and the best park event ever, Brighton and Hove Pride have committed the organisation to stand beside the LGBT community as the global campaign for Freedom To Live for every LGBT person in the world continues.

Brighton Pride Freedom to live

After decades of campaigning by the LGBT community here in the UK, we finally have legal equality but across the globe there are still 82 countries where homosexuality is criminalised.

For them there’s no equal marriage, no equal rights, no freedom for equal love, just beatings, rejection, state sanctioned persecution, prison sentences and, in some countries, the death sentence.

Paul Kemp and Dulcie Weaver said: “This is a state of affairs we cannot stand by and watch. We must act as a global community and stand in solidarity with those living in the 82 countries where homosexuality is a crime and say NO MORE.

“Now is not the time for hatred, now is the time for love and the freedom to live as one chooses, regardless of sexuality or gender.

“Brighton and Hove Pride is a Pride with purpose, campaigning for the freedom of everyone to live. Stand beside us as we stand beside those LGBT communities across the globe and help make equality a reality. Not some day, but today.”

Following seven hours of world class entertainment on the Brighton Pride main stage and a stunning finale including cast members from Pricilla Queen of the Desert and Thriller, Dolly Rocket and Sam Bailey the organisers of Brighton Pride Paul Kemp and Dulcie Weaver took the stage to explain why they organise the city’s biggest annual celebration.

Chris Cooke, Chair of the Fundraising Committee at the Rainbow Fund is coordinating the volunteers.

Chris said: “Pride Sunday is such an important afternoon for us so I am hoping that we’ll get a good number of volunteers who can spare a couple of hours to lend a hand. Paul Elgood

Paul Elgood, Chair of the Rainbow Fund, said: We are grateful to Chris for leading the team of volunteers at these events. It is literally a case of the more people who can help, the more money can be raised. We have to make it easy for people to give at these events, and the key is for an effective team of volunteers to support this. We are all volunteers at the Rainbow Fund, so we all help in various ways.

“Can I also take this opportunity to thank Lola, Davina, Tony Chapman and all at Legends for supporting us again this year. Lola and Davina do so much for us and Tony’s contribution to the local LGBT charitable sector cannot be surpassed.”

Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, the leader of the Labour Party, and Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, have sent videos wishing Brighton a happy pride.

In his letter, the Prime Minister wrote: “I am, once again, delighted to offer my support to Pride Brighton and Hove. It is a fantastic celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and its contribution to the diversity and vibrancy of Brighton and Hove.

“I am proud of this country’s record of advancing LGBT equality and rights. It was a truly momentous occasion seeing the first same-sex couples getting married on March 29, including those marriages that took place in Brighton that weekend.

“The Pride festival is an excellent opportunity to bring people from different communities together to enjoy not only a colourful and entertaining day out but a whole programme of cultural, social and sporting events. These events are a great way to enhance community dialogue and to remind ourselves of the progress towards equality made in this country. The LGBT Pride events that take place across the UK each year help to show why the UK continues to be recognised as number one in Europe on LGBT equality and rights.

“I would like to send my congratulations to the organisers and volunteers for their efforts in coordinating Pride Brighton & Hove 2014 and wish everyone attending the very best for a happy and successful event.”

Local businesses rally to support Rainbow Flag project

Community activist Chris Cooke is one of the LGBT Reps for small community groups at Community Works and also the chair of Kemptown in Bloom. Hizzie Fletcher

Hizze Fletcher from Thirteen Art Productions offered to project manage the installation, which will include contributions by established local artists including Lez, Paula Sigley, Bambi Brown, Briony Howell and Romany Mark Bruce, the sculptor of the AIDS Memorial in New Steine Gardens. A team of artists from Trans*Pride are also painting the Trans*Flag outside Superdrug.

Green MP calls for renewed push against ‘unscientific’ discriminatory blood donor rules

This Brighton Pride weekend, Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, will call for a ban on discrimination preventing gay men from giving blood.

Caroline Lucas MP

Caroline, who will be attending the annual festival on Saturday, said: “I am incredibly proud to be an MP for a city that is known for being one of the most celebrated and progressive LGBTIQ cities not just in the country, but in the world.

“We have a great deal to celebrate this Pride. We stood up for the freedom to marry and now, at long last, we have that freedom. But other freedoms still elude us.”

“I’m proud to stand up for an end to the discriminatory restrictions on gay men donating blood.

“Not that long ago the rules were improved, but it’s still the case that gay men are discriminated against and it prevents gay men from giving others the freedom to live.

“This Pride, I hope you’ll join me in calling for a ban on discrimination preventing gay men giving blood.”

While the blanket ban on gay men giving blood has lifted, they are not allowed to give blood if they’ve been sexually active in the last 12 months. That restriction doesn’t apply if you are straight.

So if you are a monogamous gay man in a stable long term relationship, you face tighter restrictions than a straight man or woman who may have had unprotected sex with multiple partners.

To sign the petition for equal blood donor rules, CLICK HERE:

Caroline added: “The current rules are not backed by the scientific evidence, which supports a six month window before donating blood after a possible risk – for all donors regardless of sexual orientation – on the basis that tests for HIV and Hepatitis C can detect infection within that time.

“I have long lobbied Parliament for a change to these laws and will continue to campaign for the government to offer more opportunities for blood screening and ensure the increased supplies of safe blood our health service so urgently needs.”

In December 2010 Caroline co-sponsored a parliamentary motion urging Ministers to end the lifetime ban on gay men giving blood. The 2011 12-month compromise, while still discriminatory, was a step in the right direction following many years of inaction under the previous Labour Government. Leading Labour politicians Ed Miliband and Ed Balls admitted they didn’t do enough, while Labour’s shadow health secretary Andy Burnham wants the ban to remain in place.

This autumn, Caroline will table a new Parliamentary motion calling for full equality in blood donation and abolishing the 12 month deferral rule for gay men.
