Local children head to The Big Apple!

Local Musical about bullying offered opportunity to play in New York City.

IT’S not every day a group of 12 children are invited to perform their show in New York City, but that’s exactly what has happened to the cast of This Boy Tom, a musical written by Natalie Sexton, starring twelve local school children from Brighton & Hove.

This Boy Tom is a musical about bullying in schools. It’s an uplifting and life-affirming tale that started life at The Brighton Fringe in 2017, and made a spectacular return this May.

Tom’s daily quest is to get through another day without his bullies remembering his existence. Jessica thinks he has a dark secret, but with new girl Flora’s arrival, is it time for something new? And is there any truth to the rumour Jessica is spreading?

Natalie Sexton said: “It’s an incredible opportunity. This production has been a passion project of mine since 2016 and to get this recognition is both humbling and really thrilling.”

This Boy Tom began life as workshops in 2016, and then had a small run in 2017 before being picked up at this year’s Brighton Fringe.

The Fringe Encore series takes the best productions from each Fringe Festival across the world (Hollywood, Adelaide, Toronto, Brighton) and gives them a slot in the Soho Playhouse, Off-Broadway as an international showcase.

Natalie added: “We are raising funds to get the show over there for the two-week run, which begins November 8 – 24. The show has a gofundme page, as well as some fun fundraising activities over the coming months so look out for our bright red t-shirts popping up across town!”

This Boy Tom and Natalie are looking to hear from local companies and individuals who might be able to help get the show over to New York.
