BRIGHTON FRINGE PREVIEW: Giant @The Warren Main House

Latest in a string of Greenwich hits, arrives in Brighton.

GIANT, presented by The Human Zoo Theatre Company, tells the story of 22-year-old Tommy. Living under the same roof as three generations of his family, everyone else seems to have learnt to ignore the strange things his nan says over dinner and the bizarre rumblings coming from the attic. But Tommy’s nan just might know more than everybody thinks…

GIANT is an explosive, absurd + visceral adventure into adulthood. Horribly honest clowns and questionable cabaret acts ignite the stage with Human Zoo’s trademark visual storytelling as this acclaimed ensemble ignite the stage with live music, puppetry, movement and playful clowning. After their sell-out success last week with The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Moon, this move to the main house at The Warren is set to be a highlight of this year’s Brighton programme.

Established 4 years ago and supported by Greenwich Theatre, The Human Zoo has already toured and developed work with Lyric Hammersmith, Greenwich & Docklands International Festival, Watford Palace, Latitude Festival and Pleasance.

James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre, said: “The Human Zoo are an astonishing company with incredible ambition and a strong theatrical vision. I came across their work when they won the 2014 Les Enfants Terribles Edinburgh Award and they haven’t looked back since. They are always a highlight in any festival line-up and I can’t wait to see them take to the stage at the main-house of one of Brighton Fringe’s most impressive venue complexes.”

The Human Zoo ensemble have come together through non-traditional, alternative training routes, including Fourth Monkey Theatre Company, National Youth Theatre, Roundhouse Circus Skills and NYFA. They represent a new generation of theatre makers who are finding their voice in the industry via practical training and hands on experience.

Artistic Director Florence O’Mahony, added: “The Human Zoo is proud to be a female-led company, and to include LGBTQ+ artists, proving that diverse groups such as this, from non-traditional training routes, can be trail-blazers in the creative industry and produce new work which is fresh and engaging. GIANT is our biggest show to date and we are excited to be bringing it to Brighton.”
