PREVIEW: BREMF@home – a weekend of joyous early music

Brian Butler October 29, 2020

Those enterprising people at the Brighton Early Music Festival ( BREMF) present their 2nd weekend of their lockdown BREMF@ home season this coming weekend.

Friday  30  October sees the Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments introduce us  to the very rare trumpet marine .

Saturday has an appearance by bird charmer Piers Adams. Filmed in collaboration with Sussex Wildlife Trust, James Duncan talks about the songbirds of Sussex, while Piers demonstrates on the recorder music related to birds.

Saturday also features Rebellion! , with Joglaresa – an irreverent look at medieval songs of protest with sometimes graphic medieval images and new animation. Check out their deliciously daft trailer above.

On Sunday afternoon there’s a lute/song recital from Musicke in the Ayre – featuring works by among others Dowland and Byrd. It’s performed by Gwendolen Martin ( soprano ) and Din Ghani on the lute and baroque guitar.

The weekend ends with The 4 Faces of Gaia – bringing together musicians from Africa, India, the Middle East and Europe , celebrating early music and dance .

Some of the performances will be streamed at the Hove Club .
