New Writing Prize announced for new Trans & non-binary voices in non-fiction

March 26, 2020

Announcing the Jessica Kingsley Publishers Writing Prize

Jessica Kingsley Publishers is excited to announce its first writing competition . The JKP Writing Prize is open to un-published and un-agented writers who identify as trans and/or non-binary, with winning entries being published in an anthology, and a cash prize for every successful contributor. Entries will be read and considered by a brilliant panel of judges, who are leading figures within the trans community: Juno Roche, Sabah Choudrey, Meg-John Barker and Yvy De Luca.

Royalties from the book will be going to our charity partner, Gendered Intelligence, a trans-led organisation that supports young trans people and those who work with them.

So, what are we looking for?

Writers should submit original, own voice stories on the theme of ‘trans everyday’ – what is it like to be trans today?

We want to hear the untold stories. The reality, the nitty-gritty. The mundane and the amazing. We want writers to challenge stereotypes and reject the norm. To inform, inspire and empower.

JKP is committed to platforming trans and/or non-binary voices, and we are internationally recognised for our pioneering publishing in gender identity and sexuality. We launched the Gender Diversity list in 2017 and have since published nearly 80 books for professionals, parents, children, allies and the general reader.

Editorial Director Andrew James says: Publishing own voices has always been at the heart of the Gender Diversity list, and I am delighted we are launching this writing prize to discover new and exciting trans and/or non-binary writers. Our hope with this prize is to give these writers the platform to be heard, and to showcase and celebrate the breadth of their talent.

The competition is now open and the deadline for submissions is midnight, 3rd May 2020.
