Fighting With Pride – free LGBTQ+ talk at University of Portsmouth for LGBTQ History Month

Gscene Editorial Team February 6, 2020

To mark LGBT+ History Month, and 20 years since the ban on LGBTQ+ people serving in the British Armed Forces was lifted, University of Portsmouth will be hosting a free public talk on Wednesday, February 12 by Lt Cdr Craig Jones MBE RN, author of the book Fighting with Pride: LGBTQ+ in the Armed Forces, and Lt Elaine Chambers, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.

Lt Cdr Craig Jones MBE RN, author of the book Fighting with Pride, joined the Royal Navy in 1989, and later became the first ‘out’ LGBTQ+ person in the Armed Forces, leading that community through a bewildering period of change. He will be speaking at an event at the University of Portsmouth along with Lt Elaine Chambers, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, who was a nursing officer in Cold War Germany but was dismissed after being ‘found out’.
Fighting with Pride marks the 20th anniversary of the lifting of the British Armed Forces ‘gay ban’ on 12 January. It brings together a selection of stories from LGBTQ+ service men and women who have served in the Armed Forces since the Second World War featuring their testaments demonstrate their loyalty, their courage on the battlefield, and their unswerving sense of right and wrong even in the face of personal costs.
This event is organised by the University of Portsmouth as part of their LGBT History Month programme of events, in collaboration with the newly formed charity, Fighting with Pride, and the Solent NHS Trust. Free event but register by clicking here.
