REVIEW: Phil Lunn Is… @ The Warren

Phil Lunn Is…

By Phil Lunn

Brighton Fringe/The Other Place

The Warren

May 3rd 10pm

An evening with a lady who isn’t to be forgotten. Phil Lunn Is…. A cabaret singer, created uniquely for this one performance. Entirely improvised songs and improvised conversation, all inspired by the audience. Phil Lunn Is……whoever tonight’s audience wants him to be and tonight the audience wanted him to be Barbara Hymmel-Hempseadgh, famous Welsh siren, tainted by scandal and an unfortunate love life and addiction to alcohol.

Phil’s’ premise is delightful and although s/he seemed slightly nervous tonight the character was engaging. It was the first night of a new fringe show & venue in the tastefully converted shipping containers of The Warren. Barbara was fairly well realised, timid, eliciting information in a gentle conversational way from the surprisingly well behaved audience and then weaving it into a tableau of songs which crossed the emotional motorways of her life, weaving across lanes, stopping at hard shoulders, soft verges and then ending up, neatly, back where she’d started.

A nice tight peace of improvisation and singing although I felt that some obvious offers from the audience were bent into what Barbara wanted to sing about, and there was an odd discord with a direct request for the ‘shipping container blues’ which turned into a sad reflective ballad, overall the songs were funny.

Responding to the audience daft suggestions, from Mexican dances to small eared men, a delightful piece of nonsense of drowning in a cauldron of marmalade and the opening number ‘I was drunk the day you got out of prison’

Barbara charmed us, we left loving her even more than before, wishing she was back in the limelight where she belonged before her addictions brought her down, and this lovely gentle clever show was a delight and sent us off into the buzzing warren crowds with a smile.

PREVIEW: New Paintings and Prints By Ruth Mulvie at BRUSH

Brush Gallery, owned by wife and wife team Hizze and Jojo in the North Laine, present a solo show of new paintings and prints by Brighton based painter Ruth Mulvie for the Brighton Festival.

THE brightly coloured, Hockney-esque and highly collectable artworks are evocative of summer Californian days. The exhibition will launch with a Private View on May 5th and will run throughout May as part of the Artist Open House season.

With their vibrant colours, smiling sunbathers and gleeful swimmers, Ruth Mulvie’s paintings are pure joy. Ruth creates her utopian wonderlands from her loft studio in Brighton. Found imagery and old photographs form the basis of her work – with buckets of colour thrown in.

Ruth has been passionate about art since she was a kid. She trained at Glasgow School of Art and studied painting. At the heart of all of her work is colour. Exploring its endless potential is one of the things she enjoys and spends a lot of time simply mixing and combining colours.

The imagery Ruth picks varies depending on what she feels like painting, but it all fits into several broad themes of pleasure.

Eurovision winner Conchita to headline Isle of Wight Pride – UKPride 2018

Former winner of the Eurovision Song Contest to perform at Isle of Wight Pride on July 21.

Conchita at London Pride in 2014

Drag queen Conchita Wurst, who won the contest in 2014 for Austria with the anthem Rise Like A Pheonix, will perform at the event in Ryde, which has been given special status this year as UK Pride. This comes just weeks after the artist announced they are HIV positive, in a move to reduce stigma about the condition.

“I am so excited to be coming to Isle of Wight Pride, this year’s UK Pride. I had such a warm welcome on Pride in London’s main stage in 2014, and the idea of performing at the only Pride on a beach is so exciting,” said Conchita. “Isle of Wight Pride also puts global LGBT+ human rights at the centre of what they do, and we all have work to do to increase awareness for those less fortunate than ourselves. I’m looking forward to being a part of that on 21st July!”

This will be only the second time Conchita has performed at a Pride event in the UK, and it will be undertaken in Conchita’s role as Ambassador for EuroPride 2019, which will take place in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

“Conchita’s last Pride performance in the UK was four years ago to a packed Trafalgar Square at Pride in London, and so we’re honoured to have her perform for us this summer,” said Matt Bundy, trustee of Isle of Wight Pride. “This is likely to be her only scheduled UK performance for 2018 and we can’t wait to see her perform to the crowds on Ryde Beach!”

The Isle of Wight Pride organisers will use Conchita’s appearance to promote awareness that people living with HIV, who adhere to treatment, cannot pass the virus on to anyone else.

“We are partnering with NAM, providers of the HIV information website ‘aidsmap’, to help people understand that people who have an undetectable level of the virus in their system can’t pass it on. The campaign is called ‘U equals U’, for undetectable equals untransmittable. There is still so much stigma around HIV and Conchita’s presence helps us address this,” said Mr Bundy.

“Despite huge medical advances, HIV remains one of the most feared medical conditions of the modern era,” said Matthew Hodson, Executive Director of NAM. “Accurate information is the best way to tackle that fear. The knowledge that someone on effective HIV treatment can’t pass it on to sexual partners is transformative. It has the power to encourage HIV testing, to challenge the stigma that people with HIV face and to improve the lives of all people living with HIV. I salute Conchita’s courage in being open about her HIV status, and her willingness to use her position to educate about HIV.”

Katharina Kacerovsky, Chief Executive of EuroPride Vienna 2019, who are supporting Conchita’s performance at Isle of Wight Pride, said: “We are very happy to welcome everyone at EuroPride 2019 in Vienna and proud to have Conchita as our EuroPride Ambassador and to spread the love around Europe during our Pride travels with her! We are so looking so forward to spend a fabulous time at UK Pride on the Isle of Wight and to show support to each other!“

Labour announce planned changes to leadership team

Cllr Daniel Yates, Leader of the Labour and Cooperative Group on Brighton & Hove City Council, announces some planned changes to the Labour team to take the administration forward over the coming year.

Cllr Daniel Yates
Cllr Daniel Yates

Cllr Yates said: “I am very proud of what our Labour team on the council has achieved over the last three years under the leadership of Warren Morgan, and despite Tory austerity and the harsh cuts imposed on the city. So I plan to keep our hard-working Labour Committee Chairs in their current roles, where despite the many challenges they have been putting Labour values into practice, and have successfully led the city council services since 2015. Over this year we will also continue our focus on the planning service, the private rented sector and mental health services in the city – as led by Cllr Cattell, Cllr Hill and Cllr Penn.

“However, I am proposing some changes for the final year of this current administration, building on our key priorities of getting basic services right, protecting the most vulnerable and growing a really strong local economy that benefits all the city’s residents.

Cllr Karen Barford
Cllr Karen Barford

Cllr Karen Barford will move from her Lead Member role for Adult Social Care, and will take over from me as Chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board. Karen as Adult Social Care lead has successfully ensured that despite government grant cuts we have protected the services and outcomes for the most vulnerable adults in the city. As Chair of Health and Wellbeing Board, she will help bring together Health and Social Care systems over the next 12 months. Cllr Clare Moonan will replace Karen as Lead Member for Adult Social Care, and will retain her vital role as Lead Member for Rough Sleeping.

Cllr Nancy Platts
Cllr Nancy Platts

“Cllr Nancy Platts, as Deputy on Tourism, Development and Culture Committee, will take on a new role as Lead Member for Economic Development and Social Value. This role will work to help the council’s spending power deliver as much as possible in the local economy, so that residents and businesses can benefit more from council spending. We want to grasp fully the social value and benefits of our many community-minded businesses and organisations in the city.

Cllr Mo Marsh

“Finally Cllr Marsh as Deputy Chair of Neighbourhoods Committee will focus particularly on community safety, and Cllr Horan as Deputy on Environment Committee will lead on sustainability, both areas where we want to listen to residents and make as much impact as funding allows.”

A full list of all Labour administration posts will be published next week as party of the agenda for the Annual Council meeting on Thursday, May 17.
