Labour Group wins national best practice campaign award

Brighton and Hove Labour Group were announced this weekend as winners of a Best Practice Award, in recognition of their campaigning during the city council elections in May this year.

Labour Group Award

The award is one of several Best Practice awards, which were presented during the opening session of Labour Party conference on Sunday morning.

Councillor Warren Morgan was joined on the conference platform by Councillors Emma Daniel and Maggie Barradell, and the award was presented by Tom Watson, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Iain McNicol, the party’s General Secretary.

Councillor Warren Morgan, Leader of the City Council, said: “I am proud to accept this award on behalf of councillors, candidates, party organisers, members and volunteers who campaigned so hard for Labour in the local elections. We almost doubled the number of Labour councillors, and gave the residents of Brighton and Hove the chance to make a positive vote for a Council that would work for them, as an alternative to the divided and directionless Greens. I am pleased that the Labour Party has recognised our achievement, and also the good work we are already doing to deliver our pledges on jobs, homes, poverty and basic council services.”

‘Only Men Allowed’ on Hospice Charity Walk

Men across the City are being encouraged to take part in a 13 mile sponsored walk along the beautiful Sussex coast on Sunday, October 25 to raise funds for Martlets Hospice.

Martlets Hospice

The women of Brighton & Hove raised almost £80,000 for the Hospice at their Midnight Walk in June, so now event organisers are encouraging the men of the city to show what they can do in their very own walk!

The walk called Only Men Allowed is open to men and boys of all ages. There is also a shorter route of four miles on offer so that everyone, whatever their fitness level, can take part.  The Martlets organisers are hoping that this option will persuade grandads, dads, sons and nephews to walk together.

Antonia Shepherd, Events Manager at the Martlets, said; “This event has always been very enjoyable, with many regular walkers. This year we are encouraging and asking men and boys to give up a just a few hours on a Sunday to raise much-needed funds for their local hospice.

“Many local men will know someone who the Hospice has cared for and their participation in the walk will ensure that care can be provided for others in the future.”

Mark Beacham has supported Martlets Hospice for many years, and has taken part in several sponsored events for the hospice.

Mark said; “I did the first Men’s Walk on my own, however since then I have been accompanied by my son and we have now completed 8 walks together. Different titles, different routes, different weather but all for the same great reason, supporting the work of the Martlets. The support of family and friends over the years has been great and after every walk a group of us get together to celebrate.

“In November 2013 a close friend of our family spent his last weeks at the Martlets. We witnessed first-hand the wonderful work they do which reinforced to us how vital their work is to our community.

“It’s not a race and it would be great to see more Men taking up the challenge. Knowing the money raised will be used for the advancement of the work going on at the Martlets, makes it all worthwhile.”

Both distances will start at the County Cricket Ground in Hove at 10am. The longer walk heads along the coast to Saltdean Lido for a refreshment pit stop before heading back to the Cricket Ground for a well-earned pie and drink. Those doing the shorter route will turn around at Brighton Pier. Well behaved dogs are also welcome and will get their own treat at the end of the day.

Martlets Hospice in Hove provides end of life care services to adults with terminal illness including cancer.  Hospice facilities comprise of an 18 bed InPatient Unit, a Hospice at Home Service, and Day Services for patients and their carers. The Patient and Family Support team offer practical and emotional support to the families and carers of patients including helping them through bereavement. The Martlets also works with the Sussex Community NHS Trust to deliver the Palliative Care Partnership; this provides a single point of contact for people affected by life limiting illness in Brighton & Hove.

The Martlets believes that everyone is entitled to die well. Its main aim is to maximise patients’ quality of life and to support patient choice, dignity and independence. A registered charity, all services are provided free of charge. The Martlets receives less than a third of its funding from the government and so must raise £11,000 a day to care for patients and their families.
