Stonewall

KATIE Cornhill, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah and Tim Toulmin will join Stonewall’s established Board, led by Chair Jan Gooding, with immediate effect.

Katie is a Manager at the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, where she has worked for 17 years, and is seconded as the Functional Lead for Prevention, Protection and Safety at the Fire Service College. Her extensive knowledge of the public sector will support Stonewall’s work in this area. In addition, as a trans woman, Katie will help to guide the organisation as it undergoes the process of becoming fully trans inclusive and engaging further with trans communities.

Phyll is co-founder and Executive Director of UK Black Pride. She is also the Head of Campaigns for the largest civil service trade union, PCS. She brings with her an unwavering commitment to workplace equality and social justice, which has secured her a seat on the TUC LGBT Committee. She also sits on the Board for Justice for Gay Africans which focuses on Human Rights, Equal Rights, challenging racism and discrimination. Phyll will play a vital role as Stonewall broadens its reach and goes deeper into communities in Britain and abroad.

Tim is the founder and Managing Director of Alder Media, a London-based communications agency. He is a director of travel PR firm MyTravelPressOffice and a Specialist Partner of Pagefield Communications. He is also a Trustee of the charity Parents and Abducted Children Together. His vast communications experience will be central to Stonewall as it continues to engage new audiences and work towards achieving equality for LGBT people in all aspects of their lives.

Jan GoodingJan Gooding, Chair of Stonewall’s Board of Trustees, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Katie, Phyll and Tim to the Stonewall Board. Their range of experience will help us to ensure that we reflect the needs of the diverse LGBT community.  A great deal of progress has been made towards legislative equality, but there is still a lot more to do, and many more communities to reach, until we can say that equality has been achieved for LGBT people. Our new Board members will work closely with the Stonewall leadership team as we continue on this journey.”

Irish rock band supports equal marriage in Ireland

Alternative rock band HAWK have released a new track, Glass, inspired by the upcoming Marriage Equality Referendum, taking place in Ireland on May 22.

Hawk

THE track has an ethereal quality that’s further intensified by drums and a stripped back guitar sound lending weight to the haunting vocals, while the video is a minimalist take on the iconic rainbow imagery adopted by the LGBT community.

Julie Hawk, lead singer, said: “During our Irish tour in April we met loads of people canvassing and raising awareness for the Marriage Referendum on May 22.

“Our date at Dolan’s in Limerick ran on the same night as a major LGBTQ party run by OUT in UL in the downstairs venue. After the gig, we met and spoke to a variety of passionate campaigners and their enthusiasm really stuck with us. We continued to see the same passion in Galway, Cork and Dublin.

“For the video, James Byrne (our director) had suggested the idea of filming colours dispersing in water and we felt this was the perfect opportunity to do something that would raise awareness of the vote, and keep it front of mind, not just with people who follow us in Ireland, but with people in London and the UK as well. With the amount of effort we saw going into the cause we’re so happy to be making a contribution, and I can’t wait to fly home to vote on May 22!”

A ‘YES’ vote will legalise marriage in Ireland between same-sex couples, and bring marriage equality for all the country’s citizens – it will also be the first time a country has legalised marriage equality by popular vote.

RadioReverb, Brighton’s community radio station, has launched a new training facility at their studios in Cheapside, offering fun, practical engaging radio presenting courses run by industry professionals which focus on practical skills and hands-on experience with a learning by doing approach.

A career in radio is terrifying. Giant consoles that look like they’re from a 50s sci-fi film, legal considerations whenever a microphone turns on, the scary prospect of what to play next and the ever-present terror of Dead Air.

So what can budding broadcasters, who want to be the next John Peel, Mary Anne Hobbes or Zane Lowe, do to help them navigate the airwaves?

The workshops cover all aspects of a career in radio from presenting, to making features. The course also includes programme planning and production to interviewing skills. With access to all the technology the workshops also focus on tech skills, using a studio and self-operating a mixing desk sometimes whilst presenters on live on air!

According to statistics from Rajar (RAJAR/Ipsos MORI/RSMB), 89% of the UK population tune into radio every week for an average of 21.3 hours per week. Despite new technology, radio has had a huge increase with people listening digitally and on mobile phones so it’s a more exciting time than ever to get into the studio.

RadioReverb is one of the largest volunteer run stations in the area broadcasting to around 75,000 regular daily listeners. It has a wide range of talented presenters, producers and professionals who have worked for major media corporations to give students the best start in a career or an interest in radio.

Kathy Caton, Trainer at RadioReverb, said: “These workshops are a completely new direction for RadioReverb and our aim is to make presenting skills accessible to all, especially those who are complete beginners or may lack the confidence to step into radio. The courses have been designed specifically to introduce people to all the areas of the world of radio so we cover job roles, production, interviewing, show planning and more.”

There are currently places on the intensive Radio Presenter’s Workshop running each month until September with further course dates to be announced later in the year.

The Feature Making Workshop is a two-day intensive introduction to making features running on Saturday 27 to Sunday 28 June and Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August.

All courses are booked on a first come, first served basis, with a maximum of eight places per workshop.
