Research by the University of Cambridge for Stonewall’s School Report 2012 found that over half of gay young people are bullied in Britain’s schools, with serious consequences for attainment and future educational plans. The Stonewall Education for All Conference will help reduce bullying and improve young people’s experiences by giving teachers a chance to hear practical recommendations from leading local authorities, headteachers, role models and young people themselves on how to tackle homophobia.

This year’s conference runs alongside the new Stonewall Youth Conference, where young people will learn how they can play a part themselves in stopping homophobic bullying. Young people will hear from gay role models from the Armed Forces, TV and other industries, and will have a chance to develop their own anti-bullying campaigns.

Stonewall Head of Education Wes Streeting, said:

Too many gay young people go to school terrified of being bullied because of the way they were born. Thankfully teachers and young people across Britain are working hard with Stonewall to help change that. The Education for All Conference will help schools work even harder to make sure classrooms are welcoming places for all kinds of young people.”

The Stonewall Education for All Conference is supported by media partner the Times Educational Supplement.

Miss Nightingale at the Connaught Theare

Miss Nightingale

Over at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing you can catch some 1940’s burlesque in Miss Nightingale, a tale of gin, gents and garter-belts which runs til the end of the week.

Not just a cabaret, this is a ‘proper show’ with a story ‘n’ all, starring Amber Topaz as the eponymous heroine.

Northern songbird Maggie Brown (Topaz) has moved to London with her gay, Jewish songwriter George (Ilan Goodman) in search of fame, but nobody wants their act and things aren’t going swimmingly with her boyfriend Tom either.

Everything changes when Maggie and George are picked up by the charming and wealthy nightclub owner, Sir Frank, but while their careers take off, their love lives become entangled. Sexual secrets are revealed amongst some fantastic new songs by up-and-coming composer Matthew Bugg.

The show is a collision of wartime struggle, the racy world of burlesque dancing and the social prejudices of the era, highlighted through the touching, illicit romance between Sir Frank and George. It promises vintage glamour, a live band and some rather tasty men taking their shirts off.

I’ve heard nothing but good about this production, so it’s definitely worth a punt.

Gay Football Supporters Network welcome new research

The Gay Football Supporters’ Network (GFSN), have welcomed results of Kick It Out’sTackling Discrimination’ survey, which showed that 84% of football fans see homophobia as an important issue.

The survey, which was completed by over 5,000 fans, was carried out by Populus and supported by the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF), Supporters Direct, Level Playing Field (LPF) and the Gay Football Supporters’ Network (GFSN).

A series of questions to help Kick It Out form a blueprint for tackling discrimination in future years revealed that many fans were unclear about how to report incidents of discrimination and were scared of being singled out if they were seen to take action. Fans also called for reporting methods to be made clearer and for more options to be provided.

Chris Basiurski, GFSN Chair, said:

“It’s great to see such research from Kick It Out. Fans clearly agree that not only is discrimination wrong but that fans themselves, along with the football authorities, need to take responsibility for tackling the issue.

“We hope that all in the game take this research into account and that the people who are the bedrock of the game are crying out for more action against homophobia, racism, and all other forms of discrimination”
