SLUT – How many men is too many?

FS magazine looks at promiscuity in the gay community.

FS MagazineSlut. It’s an insult that’s hurled around a lot in the gay community, but is there actually anything wrong with being a bit of a slut?

In fact what defines someone as slutty?

Is it purely a numbers game or is it the way you carry yourself off?

The latest issue of FS peeps under the bed sheets to try and figure out the ‘who, what and why’ of being a slut.

Back in 2010, The European MSM Internet Survey group (EMIS) asked gay men what FS Magazinethey got up to sexually. The results showed a lot of variation in terms of how many guys you bonked in the last year. Just over half of the men who took part in the survey had between one and five partners but nearly a third had more than ten sexual partners, with 5% of men having notched up more than 50.

FS editor, Ian Howley, said: “Sex is a huge part of being a gay man. In many ways sex is how we explore who we are. Gay men tend to have more sexual partners than our straight brothers but at what point does a couple of one-night-stands become a problem and can gay men ever have sex with too many men?”

Matthew Hodson
Matthew Hodson

Matthew Hodson, Chief Executive at GMFA, added: “I don’t think it’s up to health agencies to say ‘You should have so many partners and no more’. I do think we should point out that there are risks involved if you have lots of sexual partners though. The idea that we’re all out every night of the week bonking anything in trousers that moves is a fantasy. Most gay men have fewer than five partners in a year, and most gay men want to settle down with a long-term partner. Some gay men will have many more partners than that – and if that’s the choice that you make, you’re going to have to take greater care not to be involved in the transmission of STIs.”

You can read the ‘Slut – How many men is too many?’ feature in the latest issue of FS magazine, alongside other health related articles for gay men.

Jason Saw, Team Leader at MindOut said: “Many of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people who use our services talk to us about personal safety. Some worry about or have found themselves in situations where they feel unsafe, while others have been threatened or have experienced violence.

Pride Matters

Why do we need a Pride?

Brighton Pride logo

Surely the most frequently asked question when it comes to Pride.

James Brookes
James Brookes

James Brooks who is lead contributor for Pride Matters, said:

“Given the huge improvement in equalities over the last decade with protections written into law and a legal recognition of our relationships, then it is understandable that some people, including those within the LGBT community, might think that we’ve won the fight for freedom.

“However, dig a little deeper, keep an eye on the news, read some of the comments on news websites, and it becomes clear that there is still a long way to go within the UK and abroad.”

Green MEPs win cross-party support for EU action plan to stamp out homophobia

GREEN MEPs have won cross-party backing for a new EU ‘roadmap’ on eliminating all discimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Jean Lambert MEP
Jean Lambert MEP

With intolerance on the rise across the EU, Greens called for an EU-wide action plan based on all Member States adopting a coherent approach – with the European Commission empowered to take concrete follow-up measures against countries that do not comply.

London’s Green MEP Jean Lambert is a member of the European Parliament’s cross-party Intergroup on LGBT Rights.

She said: “MEPs have today made clear that homophobia should no longer be tolerated in Europe. Despite EU legislation to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace, there is still massive discrimination, bullying and violence – in schools, workplaces and in everyday life situations. To address this, MEPs have today supported the call for an EU roadmap against homophobia and discrimination based on sexual identity.

“The European Commission must finally outline a coherent approach at EU level, with concrete action against this undermining of European values. The strong support from almost all political groups for this report shows that homophobic tendencies in Europe are losing ground and a large majority in Europe no longer wants to accept this intolerance. Homophobic laws are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in Europe.”

Winter Pride UK Art Awards 2014

The inaugural Winter Pride UK Art Awards 2014 launch at Tobacco Dock in London on February 8, 2014.

Winter Pride Arts

The awards have attracted widespread interest from artists across the UK, with entries being submitted from London to Edinburgh.

Stephen Fry
Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry, who has been nominated as the Winter Pride UK LGBT Luminary of the Year, said: “Artistic and cultural events of this kind are so important for the well being of the LGBT community”.

21 Finalists have been selected by a judging panel, including sculptress to the Queen, Frances Segelman, who said: “The Winter Pride UK Art Awards represent an international opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their artworks”. The resulting creations are an astonishing spectrum of artistic practice and will be previewed at CHART gallery in Chelsea from 3-5 February 2014, followed by a display at Tobacco Dock in East London on the 8th of February, when the winner and runners up will be announced.”

Taking centre stage at Winter Pride, hermaphrodite artist XXXora, debuts a giant 16-foot painting, The Apple Tree, an alternative story of Adam and Eve and part of her Captured Hermaphrodite series.

This theme is explored further in Vardan Aslanyan’s thought provoking oil painting, Adam & Adam, and complimented by Kristina Butigans’ striking painting, Locus amoenus, as well as Rebecca Fontaine-Wolf’s, Three Graces, which is painted on chiffon.

The animal kingdom is represented by Shauna Richardson’s Crochetdermy@Bear, a life-size brown bear, and the startled Persian cats in Jesse Olwen’s, Punk Not Dead – whilst a Garden of Eden ocean is brought to life in The Coral Goddess, a coral reef restoration sculpture by Celia Gregory.

Laura Jean Healey is the only video installation artist amongst the 21 Finalists, and her ethereal film The Siren, is a spectral study of a female nude floating through water.

The weird and the wonderful feature in this exhibition; including Trygve Skogrand’s Tree of Knowledge, a multi-limbed man; Mercedes Ferrari’s, The floozy, which is made entirely of lampshades; a melting staircase by Holly Mackenzie, and a miniature staircase and diver within Kate Wragg’s pint sized, The Decision.

Throughout all the entries the inventive spirit of the participating artists has dominated – Welsh artist Ruth McLees makes use of chromatography to explore pigments and their hidden ‘fingerprints’ of colour, whilst Jae Yong Choi’s Black Cloud, is made entirely of installation cable.

Humour and laughter is also evident – there is the flying crockery of Roxana Hall’s The Tablecloth Trick; the exuberance captured in Bronac McNeill’s photograph of Rose Garden from the Drama Queens, and a Naughty Girl oil painting by artist Carl Hoare.

Pride Winter Arts

The last three Finalists for the Winter Pride UK Art Awards make use of light and dark. Electrifying and original, the imagery is powerful – Alice Stallard’s electric pink light 24/7/365 Neon, contrasts sharply with the 1940’s searchlights of Rob Ellis’ spray-stencilled Can’t Bomb Glamour, whilst the long shadows of Vanja Karas’ photograph Posthumous, Pina Bausch, lends an air of serenity and contemplation.

New LGBT football fan group coalition launched

The Gay Football Supporters’ Network (GFSN) has formed the GFSN Fangroup Coalition (GFSN FC) to act as an umbrella organisation for (LGB&T) football supporters’ clubs throughout the UK.

GFSN

The initiative is supported by Kick It Out, Stonewall, and major UK football clubs. The Coalitionhas been formed during the Football v Homophobia Month of Action.

Founding members of GFSN FC are:

• Gay Gooners – the official LGBT fangroup of Arsenal FC.

• Proud Canaries – the official LGBT fangroup of Norwich City FC (with Stephen Fry as honorary president).

• Canal Street Blues – the official LGBT fangroup of Manchester City FC.

Tottenham Hotspur FC, Sunderland AFC and Liverpool FC have all agreed to the formation of LGBT fangroups and are working closely with GFSN FC to launch them in the very near future.

If you want to see an LGBT fangroup at your club, CLICK HERE:

The aims of the coalition include:

• Providing guidance and advice to other LGBT fans interested in setting up a fangroup for their club and a support network for fangroups themselves.

• Creating knowledge-sharing resources and regular meetings.

• Advising football clubs on how to support LGBT fangroups.

Leviathen Hendricks, Coordinator of the new GFSN Fangroup Coalition, said: “The focus is often on the players and whether an out gay player would be welcome in the game, but it is important as well to ensure that fans are also welcomed by the football clubs to a safe and tolerant atmosphere. LGB&T fangroups can make a huge contribution to creating this atmosphere and we are delighted to be launching the GFSN Fangroup Coalition today.”

Arsenal Football Club’s Communications Director, Mark Gonnella, commented: “Through the Arsenal for Everyone initiative the Club strives to create an environment where everybody connected with our Club feels an equal sense of belonging. We were delighted to support the foundation of the Gay Gooners, an LGBT group of dedicated Arsenal fans, and drive an initiative where we could really make a difference with the Arsenal for Everyone scheme. It’s exciting to hear that it’s acted as a springboard for other gay supporters groups across football. By working together we can create the environment where football is a welcoming place for everyone.”

GayGooners founder, Stewart Selby, added: “We’ve seen our membership grow from eight at the time of our official launch at Emirates in February 2013 to over 30 in June when we marched in the London Community Pride parade behind the Arsenal banner as the first professional club to ever be in London Pride. Today we have 120 members with new applications coming in all the time.”

International Olympic Committee accused of hypocrisy

New Campaign attacks IOC ‘hypocrisy’ in selection of Sochi as host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Pure Sport

An international campaign to highlight “hypocrisy and contradiction” within the International Olympic Committee is to unfold across primary social media channels for the duration of the 2014 Winter Olympics which open on Friday, February 7.

The campaign will challenge the ethical wisdom of the IOC’s awarding of the Games to Russia – a country whose approach to human rights and social inclusion, contradict the basic Olympic principles of fairness and inclusivity.

#IOC (International Olympic Contradictions) is a campaign developed by Pure Sport, a platform created by leading international sports compression wear company SKINS.

Pure Sport is a movement which supports the True Spirit Of Competition and has already promoted a campaign to highlight public demand to rid international sport of anti-competitive, Performance Enhancing Drugs. Over the next two weeks, the platform will roll out a series of messages which highlight how fundamental Olympic principles have been compromised and certain social groups left isolated, by the staging of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

The two-week long narrative will be shared via the Pure Sport twitter account with full campaign information available on the Pure Sport website.

The messages will include key elements from the IOC’s own charter as well as quotes from key officials, such as former President Jacques Rogge and will highlight the hypocritical path that was followed to select Sochi as Host City and effectively endorse the host nation’s humans rights record. Among the messages to be released will be a reminder of the IOC’s declaration that it will: “act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic movement “.

Jaimie Fuller
Jaimie Fuller

SKINS’ Chairman Jaimie Fuller said: “There is no doubt that the IOC’s decision to go to Sochi is seen as dangerously divisive on a global scale and also as severely damaging to the credibility of the Olympic Movement. So what we’re saying is that this simply cannot be allowed to happen again.

“There is a responsibility to ensure that the world’s major sporting events operate in a wholly and unrestricted environment that is inclusive of all groups, irrespective of colour, race or sexual orientation.”

SKINS have a total of 25 partner athletes taking part in Sochi. The partner list includes athletes from Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain and Togo.

Jaimie added: “Sport should be showing the world that restrictive practices based on such principles are deplorable, but in going to Sochi, the IOC has actually endorsed policies of discrimination and restraint.

“To hand a hosting opportunity to a regime which operates in contravention of the basic Olympic ideals is completely unacceptable and we’re standing up in full support of those who are affected and in full support of the true spirit of competition.

“Pure Sport aims to highlight the inconsistencies which discredit the sporting movement as a whole and in this case, while we cannot undo what has already been done, we can help to apply the sort of pressure that ensures the IOC – and any governing body for that matter – practices what it preaches. The custodians of world sport must conduct their affairs in a way that ensures sporting competition is fully inclusive and completely fair.”

Scotland legalises same-sex marriage

Last big step on the long journey to lesbian, gay & bisexual legal equality in Scotland.

Equality NetworkThis evening Scotland became the seventeenth country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, after the Scottish Parliament passed the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill with an overwhelming majority of 105 to 18.

The Equality Network, the Scottish lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality charity that launched the UK’s first major campaign for equal marriage in 2008, welcomed the vote as “a milestone for LGBT equality in Scotland” following its final rally and celebration outside the Scottish Parliament.

Tom French
Tom French

Tom French, Policy Coordinator for the Equality Network, said: “Today will be remembered in history as the day that lesbian, gay and bisexual people were finally granted full legal equality in Scotland, and given an equal right to marry the person they love. This is a profoundly emotional moment for many people who grew up in a country where being gay was still a criminal offence until 1980. Scotland can be proud that we now have one of the most progressive equal marriage bills in the world, and that we’ve sent out a strong message about the kind of country we are. We know this change means so much to LGBT people across Scotland and we look forward to the first same-sex marriages taking place as soon as possible.”

Scotland joins the growing number of countries around the world that allow same-sex marriage, including the Netherlands (2001), Belgium (2003), Spain (2005), Canada (2005), South Africa (2006), Portugal (2008), Norway (2009), Sweden (2009), Argentina (2010), Iceland (2010), Denmark (2012), France (2013), New Zealand (2013), Uruguay (2013), Brazil (2013), England and Wales (2013) and parts of the USA and Mexico.

The first same-sex marriages are now expected to take place later this year after the Scottish Government pledged to speed up the implementation of the Bill. Originally the first ceremonies were not expected until spring 2015 because of the time needed to pass secondary legislation and fully implement the Bill, but in a video message to Equality Network supporters Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil, pledged “we will work with our Westminster colleagues to make it happen as quickly as possible”.

The Equality Network says the wait for Scotland’s same-sex marriage legislation was worth it due to the improvements made for transgender equality, including scrapping the spousal veto on gender recognition.

Tom continued: “Scotland now has one of the most progressive equal marriage bills in the world, securing greater equality for LGBT people and strengthening freedom of religion and belief for all. That’s why the Equality Network strongly believes the time spent considering and consulting on the bill has been well-and-truly worth it.”

Opinion polls have shown consistent public support for same-sex marriage across Scotland. A poll conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Equality Network in June 2012 showed record support with 64% of Scots in favour of same-sex marriage, and just 26% opposed. Separate polls conducted over the past three years by Populus, YouGov, Angus Reid, and the independent Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, have all shown similar levels of support.

Colin Macfarlane, Director, Stonewall Scotland added: “This a truly historic moment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Scotland. We’re delighted that MSPs have overwhelmingly demonstrated that they’re committed to building a Scotland fit for the 21st century.”
