REVIEW: The Rise and Fall of Little Voice @ Theatre Royal Brighton

It feels like two plays have met in a bar, got a bit drunk, and forgot to untangle, when it shines Little Voice is brilliant and Bianco’s voice lifts the play way way up, but then when the miserable grubby grasping family drama restarts again, we lurch onwards into despair and hopelessness, no amount of gurning or great acting can save us from that. It’s a curious combination, like flicking between Xfactor and Corrie endlessly, and it left me feeling slightly disturbed as I wandered into the night.

REVIEW: Hairspray @ Theatre Royal

To say the audience loved this show would be an understatement, they were on their feet roaring at the end of it, and it’s here that Hairspray gives it’s best, a wholesome, entertaining show, full of cartoon colour and Marc Shaiman’s luminous score (along with happy lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman) stuffed full of jubilant songs such as Good Morning Baltimore and Welcome to the 60s are adored by the audience.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL REVIEW: Kneehigh : Tristan & Yseult

Kneehigh always get it just right, flavoursome reinvention of tradition and their blend of comedy, music, physical chorography, dance and top notch performers bring a superb energy to the theatre and their take on classic situations allow us an intimate depth of connection with the action sometimes missing from more contemporary theatre. Tristan & Yseult is almost a cult these days with a huge fan base of people who love it and it only seems to get better with each outing.
