Lib Dems angry at being snubbed by Brighton NHS Campaign

Party highlights electoral rules in protest to debate organisers. Brighton Liberal Democrats have written to Defend the NHS campaign asking why they have been excluded from a series of debates in Brighton and Hove on ‘saving the NHS’. Sussex Defend the NHS is organising a series of what it calls People’s Debates under the heading Save the NHS. The first one took place in Hove last month, one is scheduled in Pavilion constituency for March 24, and a third in Kemptown for April 9.

Lib Dem candidate takes fight on tuition fees to students

THE Liberal Democrats’ candidate for Brighton Pavilion has taken the battle on tuition fees to Brighton’s students, saying: “If Labour had achieved what we’ve achieved on fair access to university, it would be shouting the news from the rooftops.”
Chris Bowers, who is standing against Caroline Lucas MP in Brighton Pavilion on May 7, addressed students at the University of Sussex last night (February 10) on the Lib Dems’ thorny issue of tuition fees.

Calls for an ‘Open Discussion’ on the future of Brighton Hippodrome

Brighton Lib Dems welcome the call for an “open discussion” on the future of the Brighton Hippodrome theatre following the collapse of plans to convert the historic building into a cinema.
THE Brighton Hippodrome has been an entertainment venue since 1897, acting at different times as a musical hall, ice rink, circus, vaudeville theatre, and has hosted shows by legendary artists such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It has been empty since 2007, when it was used as a bingo hall.

Lewes MP resigns as Home Office Minister

Norman Baker, MP for Lewes has resigned as Minister of State at the Home Office after a series of policy disagreements with The Home Secretary, Theresa May. The resignation follows his call at the end of last week for the Government to radically rethink its drugs policy following publication of a major new goverment report that found tough criminal sentences for drug users makes no difference to the rates of drug use.
