“The Pride parade is one of the highlights of the year for me, a celebration and a great community event that brings the whole city on to the streets to enjoy the atmosphere.

“There has always been a political aspect to Pride – it’s why it was started – but so much progress has been made in the last fifteen years it is easy to forget that for hundreds of thousands of people around the world the struggle for equality, rights and indeed the ability to live free from violence goes on.

“Homophobia still exists in the UK and we should never be complacent, but by taking part in Pride we are also sending a message to Russia, Uganda and many  other countries that their attitudes, laws and societies need to change, and that while we enjoy Pride in Brighton we stand in solidarity with those for whom persecution for their sexuality is still a daily fact of life.”
