West Midlands Police investigating homophobic attack in Birmingham

Catherine Muxworthy February 23, 2022

West Midlands Police are currently investigating a report of homophobic comments made to a man in the early hours of Saturday, February 19. The incident occurred in the Gay Village, on Lower Essex Street between the Fox Bar and the Nightingale Club.

West Midlands Police they explained in a statement: “We received an initial report and have since spoken to the man to obtain further information.”

Stuart Marshall reports that comments were shouted from a passing car, and that when he tried to take a photograph of the vehicle’s registration plate four people got out of the car. Luckily, he added, they were close to the door staff outside the Nightingale and this caused the occupants of the car to retreat.

Shortly afterwards, though, the man got into a taxi to go home and the same car pulled up beside them. The car reportedly tried to block the cab’s progress, and the occupants surrounded the vehicle shouting more abuse, including at the diver.

West Midlands Police told Scene magazine that: “The taxi was able to drive off and no-one was injured.”

They added: “We’re following a number of lines of enquiry – including CCTV and around the car – with a view to identifying who was involved.”
