Trans activists concerned over voter registration process

Besi Besemar January 18, 2015

The way we all register to vote has changed. It is now down to individuals to register themselves.

IN DECEMBER trans activists learnt that there were issues regarding how people register to vote, especially through the Government website.

This led to some in the community feeling that the process was discriminatory towards trans people, to such an extent that they were effectively barred from registration.

The Trans Alliance Brighton met with representatives from Brighton and Hove City Council to discuss the issues and find a way forward. The issue has been raised with the Cabinet Office, which is looking into the matter.

In response the Trans Alliance in partnership with Electoral Services will be holding an event on Tuesday, February 10 at Friends Meeting House, 6-8 p.m., to help trans people register to vote and provide information regarding concerns they have about the new registration process, sensitivity of former names and handling of protected information.
