Over 135 young people lined up to take part in the fifth annual Tackle Homophobia tournament last Saturday at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford.
The tournament run by the Tackle Homophobia Project (THP), alongside Sussex Clubs for Young People, provided twenty-one teams from across Sussex the opportunity to play fun 5-a-side football while raising awareness and showing support for anti-discrimination in sports.
The THP, a partnership between Mercread Youth Centre and Albion in the Community, the official charity of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, is in its fifth year and works with young people from 11-19 years across the Lewes District to raise awareness and challenge homophobia on and off the pitch.
Young People from Sussex had a tough challenge in their respective age groups, with fierce competition in the fast paced 5-a-side matches. Teams from Seaford Head School, a supporter of the project, were triumphant winning both the Under 16’s and Under 13’s categories. Peacehaven beat a strong Seaford team to win their age category for a second year in a row.
The project continues providing a safe informal football session on a weekly basis in Seaford alongside educational opportunities through direct delivery and resource support for groups to develop young people’s understanding of discrimination and prejudice.
