After her success organising the flagship exhibitions for the first two Brighton Pride Arts and Film Festivals in 2013/2014, curator and artist Hizze Fletcher is producing a group-show this year at ‘BRUSH’, her art gallery – hair salon, which is located in Brighton’s historic North Laine.

Hizze, who is also an independent grant panel member of The Rainbow Fund, opened the shop in December with her wife Jojo King who runs the one-chair, gender-neutral hairdressers alongside the gallery space.

The unique business features a new exhibition each month representing the cream of Brighton-based established and emerging artists.

BRUSH will feature two shows around the third Brighton Pride Arts & Film Festival; the first is a solo show of figurative based drawings and paintings by fine artist Mel Evans.

The exhibition ‘WHILE’ opened on July 4 but from July 17, in support of Pride, 10% of any sales will be donated to Brighton Pride & The Rainbow Fund.

On July 31 Carnival of Diversity a group-show will open featuring the very best of the LGBTQ arts community and their supporters.

This will include international selling collage artist Maria Rivans who is flying high following her recent solo show at Saatchi Gallery, Romany Mark Bruce, the sculpture of the Brighton Aids Memorial Tay,  HIV activist Mandy Webb, Trans* spokesperson and artist Fox Fisher, illustrator Will Blood and many more.

The previous two exhibitions for Pride ‘Icons’ in 2013 and ‘Freedom To Live’ in 2014, both held at Jubilee Library, raised over £3,000 collectively and saw Hizze working with The Keith Haring Foundation in NYC, Boy George and Nick Cave as well as numerous artists from the LGBTQ sector and their supporters.

Hizze said: “We have such a diverse arts community and it’s always a pleasure to bring everyone together for a worthy cause. Pride in Brighton is an event that is very close to our hearts and it’s a great celebration of who we are”.
