Reform UK vows to ban Pride and Trans Flags from council buildings it controls

Graham Robson May 6, 2025

Reform UK has vowed it will ban Pride and Trans Flags from council buildings it now controls after the local elections on Thursday, 1 May.

Writing on the X social media platform, the party said: “Reform UK councils will only fly the Union Jack, St George’s flag and County flags. We are proud of our country and history. Labour and the Tories want to stop this.”

The party came under fire after its Chairman Zia Yusuf announced the policy, omitting county hall flags. He said: “Reform controlled English councils will move at speed to resolve that the *only* flags permitted to be flown on or in its buildings will be the Union Jack and the St George’s flag.”

“No other flags will be permitted to be flown on its flag-poles, balconies, reception desks or council-chamber walls.”

Nigel Farage MP hailed Reform UK’s gains in the local elections as “unprecedented” and “the end of two-party politics”.

The party took control of 10 councils, including: Kent, Durham, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lancashire, North Northamptonshire, West Northamptonshire, Doncaster and Staffordshire.

It also won two mayoral races – Hull and East Yorkshire and Greater Lincolnshire – and added a fifth MP to its ranks in the Runcorn and Helsby by-election.
