Nikki Blonsky, star of Hairspray, comes out as gay

Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky has come out as gay via the social media platform TikTok, using a video of herself lip-syncing to Diana Ross’ iconic LGBTQ+ anthem, I’m Coming Out. You can see it here: 

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Blonsky, said that, ‘The LGBTQ+ community has embraced me since the moment I got Hairspray. They welcomed me with open arms and I felt so a part of the community already. For me, it was a long time coming. I was wanting to date women and it just was a moment in my life where I was finally just really ready to be myself.’

Blonsky, who starred as Tracy Turnblad in the remake of the John Waters film, which earned her several awards and nominations including a Golden Globe Award nomination,, also shared the big news on Instagram, sharing a graphic of confetti along with the words ‘I’m gay!’
