New campaign asks government to end decades of HIV stigma by telling the public that U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable.

William Hampson, a London-based gay man in his forties living with HIV since March 2020, has launched a new campaign asking the government to end decades of HIV stigma by telling the public that U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable.

William says: “Since the UK government’s ‘AIDS tombstone’ and ‘Iceberg campaigns’ of 1987, there has been absolutely no update with a similar campaign on the advances in HIV science and HIV medication. Thirty-six years of absolute silence, leaving those living with HIV today subject to the HIV stigma and the weaponisation of their HIV status.

“People living with HIV [PLWHIV] on effective treatment who become U=U cannot pass on the virus. HIV is no longer a death sentence; HIV today is manageable with an HIV-positive individual living a normal life expectancy. The irony is it is now widely accepted the only ‘danger’ around HIV is not knowing your HIV status.

“It is now time for the UK government to facilitate an end to decades of HIV stigma and the weaponisation of a person’s HIV status. Inform the public so they no longer second guess HIV and U=U and instead advocate and impart their knowledge that PLWHIV are no longer a danger. Surely this will aid the UK government’s pledge to end all HIV transmissions to zero by 2030, which is only seven years away.”
